‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Theories: Where Will The Netflix Series Head Next Following The Season 1 Ending? [Spoilers]

Since its release on Netflix last month, Stranger Things has received widespread critical acclaim. Stranger Things‘ incredible success made a second season almost certain. That just leaves the question, where will Stranger Things head in Season 2, and what key questions following the first season’s ending does the show need to answer in 2017? In this article, we’ll take a look at some of those key questions.

When will Stranger Things Season 2 take place?

It’d be quite easy to assume that Stranger Things Season 2 will pick up directly following the show’s first season. However, according to IGN, creator Matt Duffer has confirmed that won’t be the case. That’s largely because Gaten Matarazzo’s voice has dropped, making it almost impossible for the show to continue as normal following the first season. With that in mind, the plan is to skip a year. The kids will be a year older, which will in turn account for the changes they’ve undergone.

The skip to 1984 will provide ample opportunity for pop culture references, however. A large part of the show’s success is accredited to its 80s era references, and with the likes of Gremlins, Ghostbusters, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom all released in 1984, the show should have no difficulty finding plenty of references.

Is Eleven dead?

Of course, the first big question that Stranger Things Season 2 will need to answer surrounds the fate of Eleven. Well, despite the character appearing dead in the show, there are subtle references to the fact that she could still be alive, and that’s probably the case. Later in the season, Chief Jim Hopper, played by David Harbour, was seen placing a Tupperware box and an Eggo — Eleven’s favorite — in a crate in the woods. That would suggest Eleven is in fact, still alive, which is something creator Matt Duffer later confirmed, saying, “Obviously something happened to [Eleven] when she destroyed and killed that monster and we don’t know where she went. But we like the idea of potentially putting her and Hopper together.”

What will happen with Will?

With Eleven’s future accounted for, it still remains to be seen exactly what will happen to Will. However, according to co-creator Ross Duffer, the brothers behind the hit sci-fi series still have a clear idea as to where they want to take Will’s character. Will was, of course, last seen seeing glimpses of the Upside Down, whilst Season 2 will watch how he deals with the effect of that. Will escaped the nightmare place, but it will still have a lasting effect on him, and that’s something the creators want to explore.

When will Stranger Things return for Season 2?

With many of the aforementioned questions likely to be fully answered in Season 2, when exactly will that season air? Well, as aforementioned, Netflix is yet to give Stranger Things a second season premiere date. However, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been discussing where they’d like to take the show in a good degree of detail, suggesting they already know the particulars of plans to renew the show by Netflix.

That being said, when Stranger Things does return, it’ll likely be around the same time as its first season. Netflix has something of a pretty strict schedule when it comes to original programming, firmly suggesting that Stranger Things will air at some point during July 2017, just as the first season did this year.
