‘Re:ZERO’ Video Game ‘Death Or Kiss’ Features New Story/Gameplay For Ram, Rem, Emilia, And Other ‘Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu’ Anime Girl Characters

Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World is an intensely engaging series that has managed to win the loyalty of millions of Japanese anime and manga fans. Though only nearing the end of the first seasons’ episodes, Re:ZERO video game mania is already in the pipeline. While the makers of the anime and the developers of the game have been extremely secretive about the development, details are slowly starting to emerge about the game that is bound to excite many who have strongly desired an anime that extends beyond the blood and gore, and explores the multiple facets of human emotions, interspersed with epic battles.

Games based on Japanese manga or anime have always enjoyed a loyal and substantial fan following. Even those games that did not do well from a commercial perspective have been discussed at length on online forums. However, very few games will offer the level of emotional depth that is so masterfully intertwined with goals that need to be completed as the storyline progresses.

Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – Death or Kiss is based on author Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrator Shinichirou Otsuka’s Re:ZERO light novel series. The anime is about a boy whose is transported to a fantastical world, where his only true power is being able to continually re-spawn after dying, until he has truly figured out what needs to be done in order to progress. The boy, Natsuki Subaru, is trying to win the heart of Emilia and reunite with her, but seemingly impossible challenges keep holding him back and killing him in a rather painfully repetitive manner. Besides its immersive narrative, the anime has managed to infuse a lot of personality traits of the characters that the makers slowly unravel as the story progresses.

What can fans expect from Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – Death or Kiss?

According to Gematsu, the Re:ZERO game is based on the concept of the visual novel. However, the developers, 5pb, have confirmed the game will have its own storyline, which is based on an anime called Another Episode with the Candidates for Next Ruler. Nonetheless, the game’s storyline will have the core aspect of the anime, which involves the protagonist’s near certain and repetitive death (if he doesn’t make the right choice or isn’t able to complete the goals that lie in his path), untouched.

The game includes a “Beauty Queen Election,” which is followed by the “Next Ruler Election.” The winner of the contest is awarded a “noble weapon” that is supposed to bring good luck to the one who wields it. However, the weapon isn’t lucky, but cursed. Instead of bestowing luck on the possessor the weapon, who happens to be Subaru, the blade bestows the “Curse of Death.” The curse essentially causes Subaru to die repeatedly, unless he can win the admiration and affection of a “beautiful girl.”

The game moves away from the epic battles that are a staple of the Japanese manga and anime. Players of Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World – Death or Kiss have to perfect their socializing skills. The theme of the game is to socialize with multiple beautiful virtual heroines, with the goal of getting a kiss from one of them. If the hero gets a kiss, he can progress and cheat the “fate of death.”

Besides the main protagonist, the Re:ZERO game has all the cute females the anime features. The heroines who partake in the “Beauty Queen Election” include Emilia, Ram, Rem, Beatrice, Felt, Priscilla, Anastasia, and Crusch.

The game based on the Re:ZERO – Starting Life in Another World is expected to be launched early next year in Japan. With a million copies of the light novel in print as of June, 2016, the Re:ZERO series ranked 10th in the best-selling light novel series in Japan from November, 2015, to May, 2016.
