Ravens may switch to 4-3 defense

The Baltimore Ravens are really the modern day innovators of the 3-4 defense. They switched to that defense because of their tremendous depth at Linebacker. Now that those linebackers are aging, and some are in fact gone, the Ravens find themselves very deep at Defense Line. Switching back to a 4-3 defense may make the best sense for a team rich in D lineman.

The Ravens feature six lineman who could form a powerful rotation. Starters Haloti Ngata, and Kelly Gregg are two of the most dominant run stoppers in the league today. Their two backups, Dwan Edwards and Justin Bannan, would start for any other NFL team.

The Ravens also have two 360 pounders at the other D line starting spots. Kelly Talauou and Brandon McKinney are the bulk that make these a formidable line indeed. Having any combination of these six players on the field gets the Ravens control of the line of scrimmage. This leads to victories, and victory is what this is all about.

In addition to these six men the Ravens feature a slew of combo type players OLB’s Terrell Suggs, Antwan Barnes, and rookie Paul Kruger all paled Defensive End in college. This seems to give this idea a little merit. If the Ravens were to switch to the 4-3 base defense LB Ray Lewis would play the middle.
