Robert Pattinson Claims ‘Twilight’ Fame Drove Him To Drink, He Was ‘Wasted’ Doing Press With Kristen Stewart

Robert Pattinson doesn’t remember much about his Twilight days.

Although the hit franchise made Pattinson a star, all the fame drove him to excessive drinking, especially during press tours with his girlfriend at the time, Kristen Stewart.

According to The Improper, Lionsgate had Pattinson doing 80 interviews a day promoting the Twilight series. The added stress to carry the hit vampire franchise led Pattinson to a life of drinking.

“I just got wasted the whole time,” he revealed during an interview with The Times. “You feel insane, but I think the studio cut my days because I started speaking total gibberish. Be a total liability.”

The Twilight series was a major success for Lionsgate and arrived at a time when the studio was struggling to stay afloat.

This is part of the reason why Pattinson was forced to do so many interviews with Stewart. Apparently, the extra load proved more than Pattinson could handle.

The success of the series also put a huge spotlight on his off-screen relationship with Stewart.

According to Hollywood Life, Stewart blamed the media and fans for making her relationship with Pattinson into something it was not.

“People wanted me and Rob to be together so badly that our relationship was made into a product. It wasn’t real life anymore,” Stewart shared during the interview. “And that was gross to me. It’s not that I want to hide who I am or hide anything I’m doing in my life. It’s that I don’t want to become a part of a story for entertainment value.”

Twilight certainly made Pattinson a global superstar, but after the series ended, his career in Hollywood took a surprising turn. Instead of starring in more box office successes, Pattinson turned to Indie films.

According to Digital Spy, Pattinson took smaller roles because he didn’t want to star in a superhero movie.

“Your only option is to do a superhero movie,” Pattinson admitted. “You can do a superhero, or you can do indies. That’s it! You cannot even do Nicolas Cage movies. You can’t even do Con Air. I would love to do Con Air.”

Con Air is a ’90s action flick that centered on the story of an ex-con who fights to gain control of a prisoner transport plane.

Robert Pattinson’s mention of Con Air is a reference to one of his newest movies, The Rover. Pattinson stars alongside Guy Pearce in the movie, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Australia. Pattinson plays a member of a gang in the film.

The Con Air reference also hints back at a time in the ’90s when a lot more options were available for young actors.

Now, Pattinson admits that the roles aren’t as interesting, and he sometimes accepts parts just so that a film will get financing.

“It’s the smartest way to use success,” director Brady Corbet said about Pattinson. “Because the way sales work is that actors become objects with a certain value… Rob’s involvement means [a director] can be on the path to getting it made.”

Indeed, the former Twilight star has played in a number of small budget films over the past few years.

When asked if his Twilight fans have followed his new direction in Hollywood, RTE reports that Pattinson admitted that most of his post-Twilight work is not very popular.

“Sometimes,” he said. “But a lot of the stuff is very obscure. I think there is no way if you saw The Rover, you wouldn’t think, ‘He’s trying to find things completely new.’ The entire point is to be disoriented, as I am trying to do that for myself.”

Apart from The Rover, Pattinson starred opposite Nicole Kidman in Queen of the Desert and recently appeared in The Childhood of a Leader by Brady Corbet.

The Queen of the Desert was met with critical praise.

Pattinson also landed a part in the upcoming adventure film, The Lost City of Z, starring Charlie Hunnam and produced by Brad Pitt.

The Childhood of a Leader was released in theaters back in July. The movie also stars Liam Cunningham, Berenice Bejo, Yolande Moreau, Tom Sweet, and Stacy Martin.

Fans can also see Pattinson in action on the big screen when The Lost City of Z hit theaters in October.

As for his love life, Pattinson is happily engaged to English singer FKA Twigs, while Stewart is dating her former assistant, Alicia Cargile.
