WWE Rumors: The Rock To Fight Vin Diesel at Wrestlemania 33?

Now that SummerSlam is over, the WWE rumors are beginning to come out about Wrestlemania 33, which — as its predecessors before it — promises to be nothing if not memorable. Now that it has been all but confirmed that legendary wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be fighting at Wrestlemania 33, the question remains: is he really going to be going up against his Fast and Furious co-star, Vin Diesel?

These explosive WWE rumors are coming to us courtesy of PWMania, who are reporting that The Rock is setting this up with the WWE in order to not only make his much-anticipated return to the ring, but to promote the upcoming release of Fast 8, the eighth film in the Fast and Furious franchise. As rumors of a “feud” between The Rock and his longtime co-star, Vin Diesel, begin to waft out of Hollywood, the likelihood that these two will settle this score in the ring once and for all, and at wrestling’s biggest event, is extremely high and not just fanciful thinking. PWMania spoke to a reported “insider,” who all but confirmed this momentous match.

“The Rock convinced Vin to amp up the drama between them so they could turn it into a WWE match to help promote the April 2017 release of Fast 8.”

So, what’s triggered these WWE rumors? According to 411 Mania, it all started when The Rock took to social media to alternately praise — and condemn — his co-stars. The Rock, never one to hold his tongue about what he’s really feeling at any given time, said that while many of his co-stars conducted themselves like “stand-up men and true professionals,” others didn’t. He then further clarified up this little bit of shade by saying:

“The ones that don’t are too chicken s**t to do anything about it anyway. Candy a**es. When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling – you’re right. Bottom line is it’ll play great for the movie and fits this Hobbs character that’s embedded in my DNA extremely well.”

411 Mania further speculates that given the timing of the two events — Wrestlemania 33 is taking place in Orlando, FL, on April 2nd, 2017; Fast 8 is due to be released nationwide on April 14th — a fight between the two superstars would give a much-needed cross-promotional boost for both franchises.

But Yahoo News UK has a very different take on these WWE rumors: even if they are, indeed, true — and there’s more evidence to suggest that it is, rather than that it isn’t — the only reason that The Rock, and Vin Diesel, would be having the match in the Wrestlemania 33 ring is strictly for publicity purposes, further adding fuel to the “wrestling is fake” fire. For one, Yahoo News UK points out, the “candy a**es” remark was an insult frequently uttered, not by Dwayne Johnson the Hollywood superstar, but by WWE superstar The Rock. Whenever The Rock makes guest appearance in the ring, too, his Hollywood status results in his appearance becoming a so-called “flagship” one for the company.

Moreover, whether retired or not, it’s no secret that The Rock takes the actual sport of wrestling very seriously — he is, after all, the son of a wrestling legend on his father’s side, and descended from some of the greatest Samoan wrestlers of all time on his mother’s side — and he’s never shied away from either this background, or from the sportsmanship of it all. Finally, even if it is all a huge publicity stunt to get the word out about his latest movie… can anyone really think of anything that would be more entertaining to watch?
