‘Fuller House’ Recasting D.J.’s Former Boyfriend And Frenemy For Season 2, But What Happened To The Original Actors?

Fuller House will introduce two new faces for Season 2, but the characters they play will be familiar to Full House fans. The Netflix comedy is recasting the roles of D.J. Tanner’s ex-boyfriend Nelson Burkhard (originally played by Jason Marsden) and her high school frenemy, Kathy Santoni (originally played by Anne Marie McEvoy), according to TVLine.

The all-grown-up Fuller House characters will turn up at D.J.’s (Candace Cameron Bure) high school reunion, and while they may not look exactly as fans remember them, their personalities haven’t changed much since we last heard from them more than 20 years ago.

Full House fans surely remember the moment when D.J. had to choose between Nelson and guitarist Viper. Turns out 20 years later, Nelson has no hard feelings over being dumped by Deej. E! News reports that Nelson is still “very obnoxious and full of himself” and still incredibly wealthy, with houses on Stinson Beach, Maui, and in Aspen. D.J.’s ex will reportedly try to rekindle things with her at the reunion on Fuller House.

As for Kathy Santoni, girlfriend will still be catty — and just as pregnant as she was back in Season 7 of Full House. Oh, Mylanta!

Jason Marsden, the original Nelson, has not yet commented on the recast, but he did tweet that “news travels fast.”

Marsden is still in the entertainment business, with a roster of voice roles on his résumé, including The Goofy Movie, Transformers: Rescue Bots, The Legend of Korra, and even the movie The Secret Life of Pets. As a side note, D.J. must have a thing for voice actors, because her main Full House BF, Steve Hale aka Scott Weinger, was the voice of Aladdin in the 1992 Disney movie of the same name.

In an interview last fall with the blog Journey of a Frontman, Marsden said people still recognize him from his four-episode Full House role. He also revealed that Candace Cameron Bure personally approved him as her character’s love interest.

“Again, to this day, people still point me out from that,” Marsden said. “I’m part of pop culture. I mean you can’t buy my t-shirt at Hot Topic, but people know who I am and I like that.”

Anne Marie McEvoy left the acting world right after Full House. The former child actress had just a handful of roles under her belt, including the horror movie Children of The Corn, when she walked way from the business. Her last acting role is listed on IMDB as 1991. McEvoy went on to get a Ph.D. in Education and Psychology from the University of Michigan.

Fans recall the Kathy Santoni character as D.J.’s overdeveloped on-and-off friend who went from “12 to 25 overnight” when she made her debut on the Full House episode “Back to School Blues.” The boy-crazy character later nabbed three dates for the Backwards Dance before ending up as a teen pregnancy statistic in the Season 7 episode “The Apartment.”

While McEvoy has left the acting world, that didn’t stop Fuller House star Andrea Barber from trying to track her down on Twitter a few years ago, to no avail.

In addition to the return of Nelson and Kathy, Season 2 of Fuller House will feature guest star Alan Thicke, who will reprise his Growing Pains role as psychiatrist Jason Seaver.

And while Full House has Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) swooning over singer Tommy Page, Fuller House has the adult Steph and Deej hangin’ tough with NKOTB. That’s right, ’80s boy band New Kids on the Block will make a cameo on Fuller House Season 2.
