Google Play, the store that powers Google Android smartphones and tablets along with various Google computer applications has announced the downloading of more than 25 billion apps. The Google Play store currently features 675,000 apps and games both in paid and free formats.

Thanks to that milestone Google has announced a massive apps sale that will run through the next five days. Developers participating in the sale will have the option to offer apps at the discounted rate of $.25.

Each day Google Play will feature different $.25 apps from the likes of Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, runtastic, Full Fat and more.

According to the Jamie Rosenberg, Director, Digital Content via the official Google Android blog:

“We’ll also be offering some special collections like 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, 25 albums that changed the world and our 25 top selling magazines, all at special prices. Visit Google Play a little later today to check them out.”

As Google points out 25 billion is more than twice the distance, in miles, that the Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled since its launch 35 years ago.

Google still has a long way to go before it manages to catch up to Apple and its Apple App Store downloads. On the other hand Google Android is used on more mobile devices than the iOS platform which could the mobile platforms Google Play store the number one mobile competitor.
