WWE News: SmackDown Adding Women’s And Team Titles Tonight

The WWE split up their rosters into two distinctive brands in July, but at the time, no one knew what was going to happen when it came to the title. The last time that the WWE split up their rosters, they still had the tag titles and women’s title move between brands. That won’t happen this time.

Daniel Bryan took to Twitter and announced that the New Era of the WWE needed new titles and that they would introduce two new titles tonight on WWE SmackDown. Bryan has already said that there would be new women and SmackDown tag team titles, so unless they have something strange planned, that is likely to be the case tonight.

Both the tag team champions in New Day and the women’s champion in Charlotte was drafted to WWE Monday Night Raw. Charlotte lost her title to Sasha Banks but won it back at SummerSlam, but there is no way for the SmackDown wrestlers to have a chance at the title since the WWE wants both brands completely separated. That should change tonight with new women’s and SmackDown tag team titles.

The women on WWE SmackDown include two people who could step in and be legitimate SmackDown women’s champions in Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella, with Natalya up there as well. Also on the roster are Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Naomi, and the recently suspended Eva Marie.

On the SmackDown tag team titles side of things, there are two major teams that could step up and be legitimate tag team champions in The Usos and American Alpha. It looks like The Usos might be headed towards a heel turn and American Alpha is the most exciting team on the roster right now. Also in the running are Breezango, The Vaudevillains, and The Ascension. While all three of those teams have been treated poorly in booking lately, they could be re-pushed and possibly look better down the line in the WWE SmackDown tag team titles scene.

While it isn’t as strong as the WWE Monday Night Raw women, who have Bayley, Charlotte, and Sasha Banks, or their tag teams, which consists of New Day, The Club, and Enzo & Big Cass, it is still a legitimate roster and there are always reserves that can come up from NXT like The Revival in the future to contend for the SmackDown tag team titles.

It looked for a while like WWE Monday Night Raw was still being pushed as the dominant brand, with the women’s, tag team, U.S. Championship, and the incoming Cruiserweights. They also announced the WWE Universal Championship, which made it sound bigger than the world title.

However, SmackDown still has the oldest title in the WWE with the world title – the same belt that Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and The Rock held. They also have the Intercontinental title, which is an original WWE belt, while the U.S. title was brought over from WCW. Add to this fact that SmackDown has a world champion and that Raw just lost their Universal champion to injury, and it looks more even now than before with the new women’s and SmackDown tag team titles.

With the SmackDown brand bringing in new titles, apparently the SmackDown women’s and SmackDown tag team titles, the WWE can continue to work on separating the brands nicely, giving them the rival WCW styled brand that they hoped for in the last brand split but failed to execute properly. WWE SmackDown airs at 8 p.m. EST on the USA Network.
