Fort Hood, TX – A 22-year-old soldier died after being shot in the face after what prosecutors are saying was a misguided and ultimately tragic attempt to cure hiccups.

Patrick Edward Myers of Spartansburg, South Carolina was charged with manslaughter after allegedly shooting the victim, a fellow soldier, in the face to cure his hiccups. He is currently in Bell County Jail being held on a $1 million bond, according to the official news release from the Killeen police.

According to law enforcement officials, three men were inside of a Killeen house on Sunday night watching a football game together and drinking. One of the men pulled out a handgun and handled it in an “unsafe manner,” shooting the unfortunate victim in the face. According to NBC News, an arrest report details that Myers pointed the gun at the victim’s head, believing it to be loaded with dummy rounds when he pulled the trigger.

Myers was trying to scare his soldier friend, though whether he only meant to discharge a round near his head or pointed it right at him is unknown.

The victim was taken by ambulance to an airfield for transport to a hospital when he tragically died. Myers was subsequently hit with manslaughter charges after a review by the Bell County District Attorney.

And just in case you were wondering who the victim was, a Fort Hood spokesman declined to release that information on Tuesday, saying that relatives had to be notified. A disclosure decision will likely be made based on the family’s recommendations.
