Leicester City plays host to Arsenal Saturday in a Premier League clash that will live stream pitting the No. 1 and No. 2 finishers on the table last season — after both the defending champions and their closest challengers started the 2016-2017 campaign with losses on Matchday One last weekend.
Leicester City, who defied 5,000-to-1 odds to take the most unlikely title in English football history last season, fell 2-1 to Hull City — a team just promoted back to the Premier League last year. Arsenal dropped a wild 4-3 decision to Liverpool, and it was the first time since 1953 that the top two finishers in the English top flight lost their opening matches the following season.

For the defending champion Leicester City, the defeat was the second straight, after the Foxes coughed up a 2-1 defeat to FA Cup holders Manchester United on August 7 in the FA Community Shield, the traditional opening contest of the domestic season.
If history holds, Leicester City will still be looking for a first victory after Saturday’s showdown against Arsenal. The Foxes have not defeated the Gunners in their last 10 tries, managing no better than three draws in that span.

The last time Leicester City emerged victorious from a meeting with Arsenal came in the 2000 FA Cup Final, when in a replay of an earlier 0-0 draw, Leicester topped Arsenal on penalties after a second straight goalless affair.

As if the drama surrounding the early season crisis experienced by both teams heading into Saturday’s match wasn’t enough, there will be further tension around Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez after the Algerian international inked a four-year contract extension with Leicester — spurning transfer overtures from Wenger and Arsenal.

Mahrez will now face added pressure, not only for giving the cold shoulder to Arsenal, but also from his own coach and teammates.
“We are now in the Champions League and we need something more to play against the big teams,” Foxes Manager Claudio Ranieri said this week. “Now he knows very well what I want and my expectations are higher. Not only for Riyad but for all my players.”
