‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Casts Zendaya And Michael Chernus In Pivotal Roles

Spider-Man: Homecoming details are hard to come by at the moment. One example of that has been the casting of Zendaya. While it was revealed awhile ago that the actress is connected to the upcoming Spider-Man film, fans have been desperate to find out just what role Zendaya might be filling in the film. It had been previously assumed that she would be playing a minor supporting character, but, as new details for Spider-Man: Homecoming emerge, it’s discovered that Zendaya will be playing a vital Spider-Man character.

Adding to the news that Zendaya will be featured in a high profile Spider-Man: Homecoming role, it was also recently shared that Michael Chernus has been cast to play a new villain. New, as far as live action film adaptations go, but long-time Spider-Man comic book readers are very familiar with the antics of The Tinkerer.

It’s true. Blastr has uncovered details regarding Zendaya’s Spider-Man: Homecoming role, and the former Disney personality will be playing none other than Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) love interest. When Zendaya was first cast, she was billed as playing a character by the name of Michelle, but the very ambiguous nature of that casting information led Marvel fans to suspect that there was more to that particular mystery. Now, sources close to Spider-Man: Homecoming have shared the truth behind that casting, confirming the suspicions of fans.

In Spider-Man comic book lore, Peter Parker, A.K.A. Spider-Man, has only ever had two major love interests, Gwen Stacey and Mary Jane Watson. Of the two, Mary Jane played the most significant role in Spider-Man’s life. Peter and Mary Jane have always been a hot item with the couple even getting married and attempting to settle down. Their marriage hit a rough patch when Mary Jane’s pregnancy ended with a still birth, however.

Previously, Kirsten Dunst played Mary Jane Watson in the first Spider-Man trilogy from 2002 through 2007. The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, which cast Andrew Garfield as the web-slinger, placed more emphasis on the Gwen Stacy love interest, so Zendaya will be the next incarnation of Mary Jane, picking up the mantel from Dunst.

Another new casting decision has been made in bringing in Michael Chernus as the Spider-Man: Homecoming villain, The Tinkerer. Collider shared the news that Chernus, who is most well known for his comedy – drama roles like Cal Chapman in Orange is the New Black, was being brought in to play the villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which will be the first film to bring The Tinkerer to life in a live action adaptation.

It has long been suspected that The Tinkerer would play a part in the new Spider-Man film and now that hope has been confirmed for fans, via this casting news.

The Tinkerer, who is an exceptionally rare genius, earned his moniker in the Spider-Man comic books for his uncanny ability to create complex machines out of every day spare parts. The character’s birth name is Phineas Mason, but, as The Tinkerer, he operates an underground fix-it and invention lair, which he keeps disguised as a radio repair shop.

Of his more noteworthy creations, Tinkerer is known for having created Mysterio’s special suit, Scorpion’s tail, and was ultimately hired by Kingpin to rebuild the Spider-Mobile, a device created for the sole purpose of destroying Spider-Man.

Also on the villain roster, Michael Keaton will play Vulture (also known as Adrian Toomes) and Bokeem Woodbine has been cast to play Shocker, the evil alter ego of Herman Schultz.

Marisa Tomei will play an updated version of Aunt May in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.
