See, they’re not so different after all. President Obama and Mitt Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan sounded off today on the embarrassing spectacle known as the NFL.

Obama and Ryan didn’t offer any specifics about how to end the dispute between the NFL and the NFL Referee’s Association but both agreed that it was time to replace the replacement refs.

Obama said:

“I’ve been saying for months we’ve got to get our refs back… (The replacement refs have) been put in a tough situation. But the fact is this is a fast, tough game to control. And it doesn’t make sense to me for a league that’s been so successful not to want to put their very best out there.”

The NFL has been using replacement refs since the beginning of the 2012 season. Fans, coaches, and players have been complaining about the incompetent refs all year but the controversy stepped up another level last night when a blown call gave the Seattle Seahawks the win over the Green Bay Packers.

Obama wrote on Twitter: “NFL fans on both sides of the aisle hope the refs’ lockout is settled soon.”

Paul Ryan agreed with the president saying that it was time to get “real refs” back on the field.

Ryan said:

“Did you guys watch that Packer game last night? I mean, give me a break. It is time to get the real refs.”

See, they agree. Bipartisan politics really is possible.

Oh, but then Ryan added:

“And do you know what, it reminds me of President Obama and the economy. If you can’t get it right, it’s time to get out. I half think that these refs work part-time for the Obama administration in the budget office. … They’re trying to pick the winners and losers, and they don’t even do that very well.”

Obama and Ryan aren’t the only ones chiming in about the referees in the NFL. The mayor of Green Bay demanded that the NFL come to an agreement with its regular referees and the Lingerie Football League recently released a statement saying that it was ashamed of what the NFL was doing to the game of football.
