Southwest Airlines Adding WiFi To All Flights

Southwest Airlines has just finished the initial testing stages of their in-flight WiFi service which is set for full release sometimes in early 2010. According to testers the initial tests were “satisfactory” and Southwest is apparently pleased enough with the testing to move forward with the programs launch.

Beta testing allowed in-flight passengers to check email, watch online videos from sites such as Youtube and browse the full internet from their laptops and smartphones. Unfortunately Southwest will restrict the use of VoIP and video chatting, which has become standard fare by airlines offering in-flight internet. On the other hand, do you really want to hear the guy next to you talk into a computer for hours on end?

No word yet on what charge will be applied for customers looking to use the service, however pricing options are expected before the end of the year. We do know that they will be using Row 44 for their data connections and not the Delta and American Airlines chosen satellite service Aircell. [via Electronista]
