The Emmy Awards 2012 was watched by a handsome 13.2 million viewers, according to the media analysts at Nielsen. However, the Emmys still trail the Oscars by a long way, 39.3 million people tuned in for the 2012 Academy Awards on ABC.

The Emmys, hosted this year for the first time by Jimmy Kimmel, also proved less of a draw than the recent political conventions in the US: The final nights of the Republican and Democratic national conventions managed 30 million and 36 million viewers respectively, despite the former featuring an old man talking to a piece of wood.

That said, this year’s Emmys still beat the 2011 show, which was watched by 12.4 million. The figures are also an improvement on three of the award show’s previous five broadcasts, adds a Nielsen press release.

In other stat-tastic news, the 2012 Emmy Awards earned more than 1.5 million mentions on social media. That’s according to media measurement company Trendrr, which also revealed the social media figures were up by 29 per cent on last year.

Chatting online about the show seemed to be more appealing to females; women were responsible for 61 per cent of the social media entries. The 1.5 million total mentioned compares unfavorably with the 19 million people who discussed the MTV Video Music Awards earlier in September.

Did you tune in to this year’s Emmys? And what did you make of the big winners on the night; were the likes of Modern Family and Homeland worthy winners in your eyes?
