Henry Cavill Teases Black Superman Costume: What Does This Mean For The Justice League Movie?

Batman v Superman actor Henry Cavill stunned the Internet today when he posted a photo of a black Superman suit on Instagram. The image had one word as its caption: “#Superman.” The post sent DC comic fans into a tizzy with many wondering, what does this mean for the upcoming Justice League movie?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the black Superman suit could be a huge spoiler that hints at a major plot point in the Justice League movie. It could mean that the movie will follow The Death And Return of Superman, a comic book that made huge waves in the early ’90s.

In the comic book universe, Superman dies after battling Doomsday. After his death, a series of Superman impersonators appear on the scene until the last son of Krypton reappears. But this time, he’s wearing a black suit with a silver “S” on his chest.

Moviegoers have already seen part of this storyline on screen. At the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Superman dies after fighting Doomsday and his death is the catalyst behind the formation of the Justice League.

But nobody ever really expected for Superman to remain dead for good. Many fans thought that the iconic superhero would return, and that was confirmed when Henry Cavill was announced as a Justice League cast member.

But the real question is, if Superman comes back in the Justice League movie in a black suit, does that mean he will be evil?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it could happen.

There are hints at an evil Superman in the Batman v Superman movie. During Bruce Wayne’s dream sequence, The Flash returns from the future and tells him that he was right to be worried about Superman’s powers. In that dream sequence, we also see Superman wreaking havoc as revenge for the death of Lois Lane.

As Movie Pilot notes, in the animated show, Superman is brainwashed by a character named Darkseid and is sent back to Earth to conquer the planet. So the Justice League movie could end up having Darkseid reanimate Superman and make him fight against The Justice League so that he can take over Earth.

However back in June, Justice League director Zack Snyder confirmed that Darkseid will not be the main villain in the Justice League movie, Screen Rant reports. That “honor” will go to Steppenwolf, Darkseid’s uncle.

In Batman vs Superman, there’s a deleted scene where Lex Luthor is shown in a conversation with a demonic presence. According to Screen Rant, that presence was Steppenwolf. But, although Darkseid may not be in the Justice League movie, Steppenwolf may be acting on orders from Darkseid who is his leader. Darkseid could still be revealed in a later movie.

The Justice League movie trailer was revealed last month at San Diego Comic-Con. While it gave us a first look at The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg some fans and critics remarked that the preview was very light on action sequences. But it looks like there was a reason for that. Snyder wanted to show off some of the “witty banter” in the film.

“I think one of the things Zack really wanted to do, because everybody knows that Zack certainly has an ability to shoot action, was to just say, ‘Hey, I can do this, too.’ It doesn’t have to be all action,” major DC film producer, Charles Roven, told The Wall Street Journal recently. “These characters are going to be different once they begin to interact with each other.”

Justice League is set to be released on November 17, 2017. Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman and Gal Godot will star as Wonder Woman. Joining the cast will be Ezra Miller who will play The Flash, Jason Momoa who will play Aquaman, and Ray Fisher who will play Cyborg rounding out the Justice League.
