‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Julie Plec On Nina Dobrev’s Return — Will There Be A Flash Forward In Season Finale? [Spoilers]

The Vampire Diaries Season 8 is the last. While it is disappointing that The CW series is ending, nothing can go on forever. Fans are excited to find out what is going to happen when the show returns this fall. Recently, executive producer Julie Plec spoke about the possibility of Nina Dobrev returning. She also answered the question of if the season finale will have a flash forward of 60 years.

There are spoilers for The Vampire Diaries Season 8 below. If you do not want to know any information about the upcoming season, then stop reading.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Nina Dobrev is expected to return to TVD, but a deal has not been finalized yet. The actress plans on keeping her promise. However, the executive producer explained that it is a matter of how, when, and why Elena Gilbert wakes up.

One theory is that The Vampire Diaries Season 8 finale will have a flash forward of 60 years. This would allow Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) to live a full life before Elena wakes up. As fans know, their lives are attached now. If Elena wakes up, then Bonnie is dead. There doesn’t seem to be any way around that, so fans are hoping for a flash forward. That would at least give Bonnie a chance to live life without dying before her time.

So, what are the chances that this could happen? The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec spoke to Entertainment Weekly about this. She explained that they don’t have an answer to this question yet. Plec and co-creator Kevin Williamson have different opinions about flash forwards. While they can’t seem to agree if this is the right way to go, they both will come up with an idea to make the Season 8 finale satisfying to fans. Viewers will just have to wait and see if they decide to go with a flash forward of 60 years or not.

Regarding Nina Dobrev’s return to The Vampire Diaries, Plec told EW after Season 6 that the actress planned on returning before the show was over.

“Nina has always said that if there’s something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it. When she left, she said, ‘I want to see this character to its end at the end of the show, so I can’t wait to come back and put her to bed again.'”

On the Season 7 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) was tricked by the creature inside the vault. It used Elena’s voice to lure Damon close enough so it could control him. Later, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) went to save Damon and ended up affected by the monster as well. Not much is known about the creature, but it is ancient and powerful. It seems to have psychic and/or supernatural powers. It will also force Damon and Enzo to do things they don’t want to do. This indicates that there will still be some of the vampires left in Season 7. It was also teased by Collider that the “push and pull” of the monster will be explored. However, can they be saved or will the creature’s pull be too strong?

For TVD fans hoping for a crossover with The Originals, don’t count on it. It was already confirmed that the timelines between the two TV shows just don’t match up at this time.
