Barack Obama has been described as a bit more savvy about foreign policy than GOP competitor Mitt Romney, whose disastrous trip to England and other parts of the world as his wife’s horse Rafalca danced in the Olympics made international headlines for its many basic missteps, and Obama isn’t afraid to call Romney out on what he insinuates is a lack of expertise in the area.

Barack Obama’s strong challenge comes at a time Mitt Romney is lagging in polls, a circumstance Democratic strategists say is down to the likability factor most of all. Per Politico, pollster Celinda Lake says of the most recent polls:

“The window is narrowing for Romney, and he’s in deep, deep trouble … Ultimately, people don’t like this guy. If they don’t like someone, it’s hard to get people to vote for him — particularly to fire someone they do like.”

In an interview ahead of his appearance at the United Nations, President Obama addressed Romney’s hints that he has been too soft on the subject of foreign relations during his term.

Speaking to comments Romney made earlier, Obama retorted:

“If Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so.”

While Romney suggests Obama has been too cautious and, in the eyes of some Republicans, too soft on aggressive action, Obama explains that he is going more for circumspect than showy. He says:

“When it comes to our national security decisions, any pressure that I feel is simply to do what’s right for the American people … And I am going to block out any noise that’s out there.”

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will have their first chance to duke out foreign policy during the three debates scheduled for next month.
