Lexar isn’t satisfied with today’s top of the line 64GB SD cards ,so the company has announced its newest Secure Digital (SD) card: the Lexar Professional 400x SDXC UHS-I.

The new high-end SD option uses the SDXC standard while providing customers with 256GB of flash storage inside its tiny little plastic shell. Lexar stuffs the memory into such a small space thanks to the help of the 20 nanometer flash memory process, which has recently become the technology of choice for card manufacturers.

Lexar created the new SD card with a emphasis on professional photographers and videographers who shoot high-definition 1080 HD video. The card guarantees a minimum read speed of 60 MB/S.

Available this October, buyers can expect to pay a premium price of $899.99 for the Lexar Professional 400x SDXC UHS-I.

While 256MB is a lot of memory, the team at PetaPixel happily points out that SDXC cards can theoretically be pushed to 2TB worth of memory.

If you don’t need to take thousands upon thousands of pictures at one time or record hours of 1080 HD video, you can save a ton of money by simply buying five 64GB SD Class 10 cards, which will give you more memory and take some of the burden off your wallet.

As is the nature of the SDHC card business, anyone willing to wait 6 months will likely see a huge decrease in the cost of the massive 256GB cards.

Do you see a market for large capacity SDXC cards that offer enough storage for even the heaviest of photography and videography users?
