Hugh Grant Says Affairs Can Be Good For Marriage, Calls Faithful Marriage ‘Unromantic’

Hugh Grant has been known for his own side flings while in relationships. One such example was the very public incident back in 1995, when Grant was found with a prostitute and arrested while in a relationship with actress Elizabeth Hurley. Now, Hugh is admitting that he believes affairs are what keeps marriages and serious relationships strong and afloat.

The Florence Foster Jenkins star stated in a recent interview that he “admires” those who take their unions “extremely seriously” but meet up to have sex with other people without acknowledging the behavior to their partners.

During the interview, the topic about having a mistress was raised due to the character Hugh plays in the upcoming film, who does, in fact, have one. Bang Showbiz shares Grant’s words on the topic, noting that Grant likes the fact that his character has a mistress on the side.

“I always admire the French and the Italians who are very devoted to their marriages. They take them extremely seriously, but it is understood that there might be other visitors at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. You just never boast about. They never say anything, but that’s what keeps marriages together.”

The 55-year-old was very honest about his views of the foundation of marriage, branding it “unromantic” and sharing that he doesn’t think human beings are truly meant to be faithful to just one person. In his interview with Sirius XM DJ Howard Stern, Grant expanded on his views of the institution of marriage.

“I can see the lovely aspect if you marry exactly the right person – your best friend and it’s cozy and it’s lovely. But, people make so many mistakes. Do I think human beings are meant to be in 40-year-long monogamous, faithful, relationships? No, No, No. Whoever said they were? Only the bible or something. No one ever said that was a good idea. I think there’s something unromantic about marriage. You’re closing yourself off.”

As Us Weekly explains, Elizabeth Hurley stood by her man throughout the scandal that broke in 1995. The two had begun dating in 1987, and following the incident, Hurley kept on with the relationship for five more years, finally calling it quits in 2000. The former couple has always insisted that they continue to carry on a strong bond even 16 years after they went their separate ways.

In a recent interview on the U.K. morning show Lorraine, 51-year-old Hurley opened up about the relationship she and Hugh maintain.

“He’s still my best friend, and he’s very important to me.”

Hugh is a father to Tabitha, 4, and Felix, 3, whom he shares with actress Tinghan Hong. He also shares an 8-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son with Swedish producer Anna Eberstein. Do the math, and this points to the fact that Grant lives by his word, seeing as he fathered John and Felix, sons from different mothers, within months of each other. Grant is said to be currently in a relationship with Eberstein.

The actor went on to joke about the fact that his co-star in Florence Foster Jenkins, Simon Helberg, was taking part in his first movie, but that he was quickly made aware of the fact that Helberg is actually a “much bigger star” than Grant is due to the massive success of Big Bang Theory, in which he stars.

“This guy Simon Helberg who’s in ‘Florence Foster Jenkins,’ I might have been vaguely patronizing to him because he hadn’t done films before. Gradually, you realize, not only is the guy a much bigger star than me, he’s maybe the richest man I’ve ever met.”
