Entertainment Weekly‘s latest edition has revealed that Negan’s (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the TV series) backstory will be covered in Season 7 of The Walking Dead. So, for fans who have always wondered at why Negan is the way he is, those answers could be coming your way very soon.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed that Season 7 of The Walking Dead will explore Negan’s backstory according to Comic Book.

“You’re going to find out in that time Negan has been running his own show. He has created his army of followers – and some are probably reluctant followers, and [since] they’re reluctant followers he has a way to deal with that as well. We’ll find out how Negan has come to be who he is. We’re going to get some backstory very quickly on how the Saviors operate and how Negan operates.”

So, could Walking Dead fans get some episodes of Season 7 dedicated entirely to Negan’s backstory? While it has been stated Episode 1 of Season 7 will reveal who Negan killed, could this episode also deal with Negan’s backstory as well?

But, as CinemaBlend points out, will this dampen the villainous aspect to Negan in The Walking Dead? After all, comic book fans have wondered about Negan ever since he burst into the comic version of The Walking Dead. Characters and readers alike, knew nothing of Negan. He was simply a loose cannon who liked to punish people by bashing their skulls in with a barbed-wire covered baseball bat called Lucille.

The show’s creator, Robert Kirkman, has just started to reveal Negan’s backstory to comic book fans of The Walking Dead, in Image+. This could be this reason AMC chose to reveal Negan’s backstory sooner rather than later in an effort to keep current with the comic books. Or, perhaps it is even to get the full story of Negan’s out there at the same time the final installment is revealed in Image+.

While AMC may chose a completely different backstory for Negan in the TV version of The Walking Dead, it is just as likely they will use the offical story from the comic books as well. So what is Negan’s backstory according to the comics?

iDigitalTimes reveals Negan was “working as a gym teacher and car salesman” before the zombie apocalypse hit. He was married but having an affair after discovering his wife had cancer. It is also an affair his wife knows about. Already, he is not such a likable character. However, he does redeem himself somewhat when his wife’s condition worsens and he chooses to end the affair in an effort to spend more time with his dying wife, who he genuinely seems to love. Well, he must have loved her because her name was Lucille and that is what he named his infamous baseball bat, in a tribute to her it seems.

As Lucille is in hospital, dying, Negan decides to stay by her side even with the advent of the zombie apocalypse. He watches as she dies and then reanimates. As yet, the fate of Negan’s wife is not known until the next edition of Image+ is published, however Walking Dead fans know that Negan is still alive. So he, at least, escaped his reanimated wife, Lucille. As iDigitalTimes points out though, it seems possible Negan’s wife may have been his first kill. Considering Negan was also a fan of baseball in the comic book reveal, perhaps that baseball bat he carries around now was what he killed his wife with? Only time will reveal all the answers about Negan’s backstory in The Walking Dead.
