2016 Rio Olympics: Medal Count Standings Through 2nd Full Day Of Events (Updated)


The second full day of medal events have begun at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and it was a tight race through day one. The United States ended the first day tied with China and Japan for the lead with five overall medals each. As the night started to come to a close, the U.S. was behind a little bit, but the women’s swimming team were able to help them catch up. Now, it’s time to check out things for day two and the overall medal standings.

It was a tight race through the first day of medal events with a three-way tie once all those competitions were over. Australia was in fourth place with three overall medals and four countries were tied with two medals each.

Not all of the action was in the medal events, though, as some of the preliminary rounds truly brought forth some incredible happenings and upsets.

As reported by CNN, Venus Williams‘ quest for another gold medal in the Olympics for singles tennis was shut down quickly. Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium was able to take her out in a three-hour match that was a highlight of day one.

The first medal event of day two was the women’s 10m air pistol and the gold medal was won by Zhang Mengxue of China according to Reuters. It was the first gold of these games for China and it was won in an impressive fashion.

Vitalina Batsarashkina of Russia took the silver, while Anna Korakaki took the bronze medal to win Greece it’s first medal of these Olympics.

In all, there are 205 countries competing in these Olympics so if a country isn’t listed, they haven’t won any medals at all yet.

There are still a few medal events going on and to come at the time of this writing. There are still medal events today for archery, swimming, shooting, judo, weightlifting, diving, fencing, and more that will take place over the next hours.

As those events conclude, the list above will be updated to show the full medal results for day two of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Early on Saturday, the Team USA women’s basketball team started their quest for the gold medal in impressive fashion by destroying Senegal. The preliminary round game saw Team USA chalk up a new U.S. Olympic record for points in a game with 121, according to Excelle Sports.

Day two of the 2016 Rio Olympics has already started off in a big way with some of the preliminary rounds and heats as well as the medal events. The race for the top spot in the overall medal count standings is well underway and it looks like it could be a tight one over the next two weeks. The United States has some tough competition from around the world and countries such as China, Japan, and Australia are not going down without a fight.
