Arsenal

Having finished second behind champions Leicester City in the Premier League during the last campaign, hopes were high from Arsenal ahead of the new season. The reason that the Gunners failed to land the title was attributed to Arsenal’s lack of options up front, with France striker Olivier Giroud being their only player who managed to score more than 20 goals during the season. Football experts suggested that Arsenal need another top-class goalscorer if they are to mount a serious title bid this season.

However, with only a week to go before Arsenal kick-off their Premier League season against Liverpool next Sunday, manager Arsene Wenger has still not made any significant purchases in that department, only adding little-known Japanese striker Takuma Asano to their ranks.

Moreover, Arsenal are also looking for options at the back with their experienced German center-back, Per Mertesacker, having sustained a long-term injury during a preseason game. The rancor surrounding Arsenal will only get bitter if Wenger fails to make purchases considered necessary for making the team better, even though he did add Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka to Gunners’ midfield even before the Euro Championships began in early June.

Wenger, on his part, has reassured fans that he remains active in the transfer market, suggesting that Arsenal fans could expect arrivals in the last week of August, according to Arseblog.

“We still look up front, we still look at the back. It’s a long period until the end of the transfer market, sometimes things move in the last week. You never know when you have an opportunity, so you have to always be on alert, day and night, and when it comes you have to catch it.”

Having said that, Wenger will be keen to see how ready Arsenal are when his players take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Sunday. England attacker Theo Walcott may be burdened with the task of leading the line in the absence of reinforcements, while younger players like Alex Iwobi and Chuba Akpom may also get to show their potential and convince the manager to include them in the team against Liverpool next week.

Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey could make the squad having joined training earlier this week, while players who went far in the European championships — Laurent Kosciely, Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil — still remain sidelined.

Arsenal have had a great preseason so far, having won all their games and even managing to put eight goals past Norwegian side Viking FK in their last game.

Manchester City

Compared to Arsenal, Manchester City have already taken the transfer market by storm, having made six purchases under the astute leadership of new manager Pep Guardiola, who made the switch over from Bayern Munich in the summer, where he won three Bundesliga titles in three years with the Bavarian club.

Manchester City begin a new chapter in their history under one of the most successful managers plying their trade in the world today, and the match against Arsenal will provide the first stern test for Guardiola, as well as preparing his team for the challenges of the English game.

City have had a less than impressive preseason so far, having lost against Bayern Munich and drawing against Borussia Dortmund in normal time. But, as much as those defeats might be a signal of what City need to improve on, the results will not be too much of a concern for Guardiola, who will hope his team can put up a fine performance against Arsenal.

New signing Leroy Sane could feature in the game, reports Manchester Evening News, while players like Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Joe Hart, Raheem Sterling, Nolito, and Nicolas Otamendi are all back from extended summer holidays.
