Apple iPhone 7 Plus Could Be Surprisingly Powerful

The Apple iPhone 7 Plus could be a surprisingly powerful handset if new rumors are to be believed. Those rumors say the newest version of Apple’s biggest smartphone is going to have 3GB of RAM.

While it doesn’t sound like a huge boost to the 2GB of RAM that is currently on board the Apple iPhone 6s, it would mean quite a bit better performance. The new report, from DigiTimes, doesn’t indicate whether the 7s and the 7s Plus will both have the bigger amount of RAM.

As BGR points out, it would stand to reason that only the larger iPhone would be equipped with Apple’s bigger chip. The website claims Apple has been notoriously stingy with things like RAM. It would be a rather big step to allow one of its iPhones to carry as much as 3GB.

This has best been demonstrated by the fact that Apple loves to offer iPhones that are only bringing 16GB of storage. Stinginess is one reason, and the expanded price for the iPhone 7 Plus is another. Apple tends to add pricier components only to pricier handsets.

The real reason the Apple iPhone 7 Plus might be the only model getting the 3GB of RAM is that the camera on that model is going to be quite souped up. BGR says the new camera would need more RAM to operate the iPhone 7 Plus properly.

The rumors that more RAM was coming to one of the company’s handsets have been flying around Cupertino for a while now. The industry has been waiting and hoping those rumors would come true. The firm hasn’t confirmed its newest model is going to carry this much memory so for now, they are still rumors.

In May, the most believable report came from reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who issued a research note claiming the Apple iPhone 7 Pro would be carrying 3GB of RAM. The analyst laid out that this new amount of RAM was needed to run the new camera system.

This new camera system comes from Apple having acquired LinX back in 2014. The industry has been waiting for the company to put what it was able to pick up into action. Before being acquired, LinX said that it was leading the way in “DSLR performance in slim handsets.”

The souped-up camera has been something that has been talked about since last November. John Gruber of Daring Fireball talked about rumors he had heard on his Talk Show podcast.

“I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery.”

Gruber said the above during his podcast. While we obviously don’t yet know exactly what kind of advancements the Apple iPhone 7 Plus is going to make, all accounts say Apple is going to be making some leap forward.

The wait to see just what the jump is going to be might be short as we head towards the fall. While we don’t yet know when Apple is going to be unveiling the iPhone 7, or the iPhone 7 Plus, or even the iPhone Pro, there are some dates that we can guess based on common sense.

The new iPhones are usually announced and rolled out in September. Recent rumors have pegged the official reveal of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus for September 7. Those same rumors claim once the handset has gotten its reveal, it will be officially available a week later. Just what the newest version of what the Apple iPhone 7 will bring will be found out soon enough.
