Great moments in science: study finds foreclosures cause depression

A new study has found that surprise, surprise, the US housing crisis is impacting on the mental health of American’s, and not just their wallets.
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine researchers said that almost half of people studied while undergoing foreclosure reported depression symptoms, and 37 percent of the participants met screening criteria for major depression.
The researchers studied 250 Philadelphia homeowners. These people were also found to not have the ability to pay for prescription drugs in many cases and were not eating on a regular basis, the researchers said in a statement. They said the findings should serve as a wakeup call to policy makers to tie healthcare into their responses to the housing problem.
The only surprising thing was that they only found that 50% of people had symptoms and not nearly 100%. Seriously, what did they expect to find? people happy about being foreclosed on?
