Jared Leto Embraced ‘Suicide Squad’ Character By Giving Truly Gross Gifts

Jared Leto has long been well-known as a great character actor, and it doesn’t appear that changed with his role in Suicide Squad. To embody the Joker, who he was playing, reports have been circulating for a while now that Leto gave his castmates some interesting gifts while they were all on set.

It appears as though Jared Leto stayed in the theme of his Suicide Squad character by giving some castmates live rats or dead pigs, and other things that only someone as twisted as the Joker would give them. Karen Fukuhara, who plays the samurai warrior woman, Katana, said she got her fair share of provocative gifts from Leto.

Fukuhara told USA Today that Leto gave his Suicide Squad castmate some sex toys, as well as her first porn mag. Fukuhara says she was able to get Leto to sing the magazine as The Joker. The gifts would have seemed strange if Leto has returned to being Leto during shooting, but his costars say he never did that.

Jared Leto made sure to stay in the character of The Joker while shooting Suicide Squad. It seems as if most of the people who worked alongside Leto took it in stride. Fukuhara relayed one story about the first time she met Leto.

“The first day he was on set, I went up to him and said, ‘Hi, I’m Karen, nice to meet you. I play Katana.’ And he says, ‘He, he, he, he, he. Hi, pretty.’ It was the creepiest and coolest experience of my life.”

Joel Kinnaman, who plays one of the real good guys in the film, Rick Flagg, backed up the story about Leto staying in character while they were all on set. Kinnaman told Variety that he had worked with Leto before Suicide Squad. The former Robocop star says he never saw the Jared Leto he knew while they were filming. Instead it was The Joker or Mr. J.

Talking about the performance, he said The Joker was a magnetic personality and that it was an amazing performance in Suicide Squad. Kinnaman also detailed some of the crazier gifts he received from his zany costar.

While on the Suicide Squad set, Kinnaman says Jared Leto gave him things like used condoms and a couple of sex toys. Yes, he was given used condoms. One of the funnier anecdotes to come from Kinnaman was when someone asked if he had sent any presents back to Leto.

Kinnaman found that question rather funny, responding “when someone sends you a used condom, I don’t want to play anymore. I don’t like your game, and I don’t want to play.” It seems there were plenty of other people on the Suicide Squad cast that felt roughly the same way.

While there were plenty of Suicide Squad members who went out and got tattoos together, there are no reports anyone decided to try and one up Leto. That does not mean there weren’t some rather odd goings on that didn’t have anything to do with Leto.

Another story Fukuhara relayed was the one where Jai Courtney apparently intentionally peed his pants in front of the entire Suicide Squad cast. Fukuhara said the group was shooting a scene in the rain towers when Courtney made a proclamation.

“He said, ‘You know what? I’m just going to pee my pants.’ So we said, ‘Do it, Jai,’ thinking he wouldn’t do it. Sure enough, he peed his pants. He had duct tape on his shoes, so it went straight through his pants to his boots and his boots were foaming. It’s so Boomerang and it’s so fitting, I love him.”

Suicide Squad, complete with Jared Leto as The Joker, opens on Friday.
