Michael Douglas’ Son Cameron Released From Prison After Nearly Seven Years

Cameron Douglas, the eldest son of actor Michael Douglas, has been released from prison after nearly seven years behind bars. Cameron Douglas, son of Michael Douglas, the star of Wall Street and Basic Instinct with first wife Diandra Douglas, was scheduled to be behind bars until 2018 for drug offenses. Cameron was released early into a halfway house after most recently serving time in Maryland’s Cumberland Federal Corrections Institute. Although originally scheduled for release two years ago, Cameron Douglas had time added to his sentence after sneaking drugs into prison. Prior to his release, Cameron Douglas had been in solitary confinement for over two years.

According to the Inquisitr, Cameron Douglas is not the first child of privilege to get into trouble with drugs and alcohol, and he likely won’t be the last. Peter Brant, Jr. and Harry Brant, sons of former supermodel Stephanie Seymour, have both been arrested this year for being under the influence in public. Last month, Harry Brant stiffed a cab driver and then ran into the night with a bag full of cocaine. Son Peter Brant, Jr. tried to board an airplane drunk and assaulted a police officer, leaving her with a sprained wrist. Their mother, Stephanie Seymour has also been arrested for drunk driving.

Page Six is reporting that Cameron Douglas, son of actor Michael Douglas and grandson of Kirk Douglas, got a quiet release into a halfway house after almost seven years for selling and possessing meth and heroin. During his time in the halfway house, Cameron Douglas is planning to write a book about his descent from the child of a Hollywood star to a life behind bars.

Cameron Douglas started doing his time behind bars at around the same time his father, Michael Douglas, began his battle with throat cancer.

“It broke my heart, the combination [of my diagnosis and Cameron’s incarceration].”

Michael Douglas was said to be a regular visitor at the prison while Cameron Douglas was incarcerated. To this day, Michael Douglas has had complaints about the American prison system.

“I’m questioning the system. At first I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I’ve reached a point now where I’m disappointed with the system.?.?. If you happen to have a slip, they punish you. In my son’s case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement.”

People Magazine says that though Cameron Douglas has had a problem with drugs for years, Michael Douglas claims that his son is a non-violent offender, and he was treated more harshly than was necessary. After the first arrest of Cameron, Michael Douglas seemed optimistic, saying that “we are doing fine,” saying that things would go well for Cameron Douglas, although he recognized that his son was an addict.

“It’s a very difficult situation and painful, as I’m sure any mother or father of a substance abuser knows. So we’re doing the best we can.”

Michael Douglas claims that son Cameron Douglas is now contrite, and he has gotten some perspective about his addiction and his time behind bars.

“I’m not saying that I didn’t deserve to be punished, or that I’m worthy of special treatment. I made mistakes and I’ll gladly and openly admit my faults. However, I seem to be trapped in a vicious cycle of relapse and repeat, as most addicts are. Unfortunately, whereas the effective remedy for relapse should be treatment, the penal system’s “answer” is to lock the door and throw away the key.”

Cameron Douglas now says that he is grateful for the support of his family and happy to be out from behind bars.

Do you think that Cameron Douglas’ sentence was too long since he was a non-violent, drug offender? Should addicts be sent to prison or offered medical treatment for their disease? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
