‘The Vampire Diaries’ Final Season — Nikki Reed To Replace Nina Dobrev As Ian Somerhalder’s Love Interest?

The Vampire Diaries will officially wrap up with the conclusion of Season 8.

While fans are sad to see Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley part ways, many questions about the final season still remain. Will Nina Dobrev make a final cameo before the end? Or will Nikki Reed replace her as Somerhalder’s love interest?

According to Unreality TV, there is a possibility that Reed will be a part of The Vampire Diaries next season. In fact, Reed joined Somerhalder for a special dinner celebration to mark the beginning of production for Season 8.

“Happy Season 8, last in a series (for tonight). #TVD,” Julie Plec captioned a photo of the cast on Instagram.

Interestingly, Reed was the only person in the photographs who wasn’t a part of the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. Is this a subtle hint that she will make an appearance on the show in the coming season?

Nothing official has been released about Reed’s involvement in the series or what part she might play. However, this new development is definitely something fans will have to watch in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Collider is reporting that Plec and her time are already in the process of writing the script for Season 8. Executive producer Kevin Williamson wrote the premiere for Season 8 and will help Plec with the series finale.

The last season of The Vampire Diaries will include 16 episodes, all of which will be titled from memorable lines from Season 1.

As far as Dobrev is concerned, Plec is still planning on bringing the actress back for the finale, though nothing has been negotiated at this point.

“It would be a real tragedy if we couldn’t bring that story back around, full circle,” Plec stated.

According to Collider, Plec has always wanted to bring Dobrev back for the series finale. The only hurdle is finding enough time in Dobrev’s busy schedule to work on the television show.

“It’s what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it’s what I’ve got in my head,” Plec previously stated. “Obviously, things can change throughout time… I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end.”

Does this mean Elena and Damon will get the happy ending so many fans desire?

For Somerhalder, his idea of the perfect ending doesn’t include a reunion with Elena.

“Happy endings don’t happen in Mystic Falls. The happy ending I could see is that this girl gets to live her life, never even knowing these two brothers exist,” Somerhalder shared. “Paul [Wesley] and I think the Salvatore brothers should go to some beautiful island in the Caribbean and, in their Speedos, sit on the beach all night, looking up at the moon and bonding like brothers, drinking 60-year-old Barbados rum. And when the sun comes up, they should have their final toast, give each other a hug, throw their rings into the sea, and [turn to dust]. That’s a happy ending. They’re in a great place with great lives.”

Meanwhile, Just Jared is reporting that Reed joined Somerhalder for 2016 San Diego Comic-Con. The pair posed together for cameras during the event and were even spotted at Entertainment Weekly’s Comic-Con Bash.

After the event, Just Jared released photos of Somerhalder and Reed leaving LAX on Thursday. The pair traveled to Atlanta in order to start production for Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries, fueling more rumors that Reed will make a cameo on the show.
