Woman Accused Of Being A Witch: Stripped Naked, Forced To Drink Urine

In Bihar, India, a woman was allegedly beaten up, stripped naked and forced to drink her urine by four men in front of an entire village.

According to FirstPost, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Anjani Kumar, stated in her report that four persons beat up a Dalit (a member of the lowest caste in Indian caste system) woman and was subsequently forced to drink her own urine after parading her naked in the entire village.

FirstPost further revealed that the incident occurred when some children of the village fell terribly ill, and some locals, including the accused, believed that the reason behind their illness is because of the witchcraft performed by the victim.

The shameful incident took place in the Darbhanga district of Bihar. According to NDTV, the woman was from Pipra village that falls within the jurisdiction of Baheda police station. According to the submitted charge sheet, four men, Domu Yadav, Santosh Yadav, Bachelal Yadav and one other from the same village stripped her naked, thrashed her and even made her drink her own urine.

The unnamed victim stated that her husband, Ajay Paswan, works as a laborer in Gujarat and all the accused entered her house on Monday, dragged her outside her house, stripped her naked and made her drink her urine.

After doing these shameful acts, the accused threatened the victim that if she will ever report about this to anyone, or if they are found guilty, then they won’t hesitate in killing her along with her entire family.

According to Indian caste system, Dalit people are those members of a society who are being oppressed and are untouchables. Though the name has been in existence since the 19th century, it was India’s former economist, B. R. Ambedkar who popularized the terms. Ever since India got its independence in 1947, the ruling government has tried to provide jobs and educational opportunities for all the Dalits. However, still there are many villages where the literacy rate is lower compared to the rest of the country, and as a result of which these crimes happens.

Congress leader Shobha Oza stated that this incident shows us that we are not living in the 21st century.

“The governments will have to become really strict and strict action must be taken against those elements, who behave with the women in such a manner. The government is answerable to ensure the safety of every citizen, especially the safety of women, Dalits along with weaker sections of the society and it is their duty to keep them safe.”

Well, this is not the first time when such incidents have been reported.

Back in 2014, a 35-year-old woman was dragged out of her home, beaten and forced to eat human feces by several villagers who accused her of being a witch. It was reported that 11 people in Bihar state’s Katihar district attacked the woman while her husband was away. The victim revealed to the police that the villagers have accused her of causing the death of a 30-year-old male who died from an illness.

Rakesh Kumar, then sub-divisional police officer, stated that they have arrested a 60-year-old male villager and are going to charge him with wrongful restraint and physical assault, and the search of the other 10 accused was still on.

“The villagers dragged the woman out of her house and made her consume human excreta, blaming her for the death of the man. The victim told us the accused persons branded her a witch and said it is because of her that everyone in the village was falling sick,” Mr. Kumar further added.

Meanwhile, Anjani Kumari has stated that the victim’s complaint has been lodged, the police have started their investigation, and strict actions would be taken against all the culprits. At this moment, all the culprits are in hiding, and the police in charge and the ruling government party are yet to comment on the status.
