New York Football Giants have big questions at reciever

After cutting WR Plaxico Burress, due to his legal troubles, and letting WR Amani Toomer continue his career elsewhere the Giants need help at this position. While they made QB Eli Manning the highest paid NFL player, he will have little success unless a new set of receivers can step up in 2009. After last night’s pre-season debut several questions remain about the Giants receiver corps.

Domenik Hixon and Steve Smith ( not the more famous Smith of the Carolina Panthers) are projected as the starters. Since Smith is injured the Giants started four year veteran Sinorice Moss in his place last night. Moss failed to make a significant contribution, catching one ball for nine yards despite taking a big hit.

While 2nd year man Mario Manningham showed signs of his big play potential, breaking a 21 yard punt return and making an ice play on a come back pass that was negated by a penalty, Mario for the most part struggled leaving the Giants 3rd receiver position unclaimed.

This year’s firstround draft pick, Hakeem Nicks (29th overall), also struggled dropping a ball even though he had a step on his defender running a go route. Nicks only caught on pass for 9 yards. Huge Rookie, Ramses Barden6’6? (2009 Third Round pick) impressedwith a big gain on a crossing route, showing some of his Buress like big play ability.

Super Bowl 42 hero, coming back from a knee injurt that kept him out of the 2008 season, also turned in a sub par performance. What all of this means is the Giants still have questions at receiver that must be addressed.
