Mitt Romney is trying to change the subject after a leaked video showing the GOP candidate pandering to a room full of people at a $50,000 a plate fundraiser, but it seems the Republican is reaching as he claims secret recordings of Obama have also been released this week.

Mitt Romney’s subject change comes at a time when the candidate has attempted to successfully double down on remarks he made about half of Americans being “victims” seeking a handout, trying to soften the blow of the harsh words while still sticking by the message so as not to appear to be apologizing in any way.

Romney tried to change the subject on friendly ground with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto — and when given the chance to expound upon his assertion that half of Americans drain the other half through “entitlements” and government dependency, he instead tried to turn the conversation around to President Obama.

The hidden camera aspect of Romney’s remarks must really be hurting him, because it’s the exact frame he used to try to tar Obama with the secret recording brush — although the marks he refers to in the recording he says just came out happened nearly 15 years ago.

A clearly desperate Mitt Romney said:

The president’s view is one of larger government, there’s a tape that came out today where the president’s saying he likes redistribution … I disagree … I think a society based upon a government centered nation where government plays a larger and larger role, redistributes money, that’s the wrong course for America.”

Romney tries again to suggest that a tape of Obama making remarks about redistribution was released “today,” and he reiterates his message:

“I know there’s a divide in the country about [redistribution.] I know that some believe that government should take from some and give to the others. I think the president makes it clear in the tape that was released today that that’s what he believes.”

Well, Mitt Romney, not to change the subject, but if we are going by what someone said they believed in 1998, weren’t you pro-choice and about to invent a health care mandate?
