Whoa! Chick-fil-A did an abrupt about face, and, months after controversy about the company’s donations to anti-gay groups ignited, the restaurant chain announced it would no longer be funding anyone with a political agenda.

If all reports are accurate, that is pretty cool of Chick-fil-A. Should they have done it a bit earlier? Perhaps.

But the Chick-fil-A debate was frustrating at its core because many who supported the organization (including high-profile politicians like Paul Ryan and Mike Huckabee) framed the issue as free speech related, which it never was. Sure, a company that opposes gay marriage may see an understandable drop-off in sales, but the real reason people were ticked and angry was that profits went directly to efforts to stop gay marriage and to send kids to anti-gay camps to convert them.

When President Obama was effusively hugged by a pizza shop owner in Florida, many angry Republicans wanted to sink and boycott the man, a registered Republican, comparing it to Chick-fil-A. But there was no indication money spent on pizza would be in part allocated to causes people may find immoral, like the dilemma presented by Chick-fil-A.

In a statement on Chick-fil-A’s change of heart, the Civil Rights Agenda’s Anthony Martinez confirms:

“I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”

“It has taken months of discussion, both with our organization and with the Alderman, for Chick-fil-A to come forward with these concessions and we feel this is a strong step forward for Chick-fil-A and the LGBT community, although it is only a step.”
