‘Game Of Thrones’ Soon Coming To An End As HBO Confirms Final Season – Spinoff On The Way?

Fans are anxiously awaiting the start of Season 7 of Game of Thrones, but there is something much bigger that has just been announced and it is indeed the end. It has now been confirmed by HBO that the hit series will soon end as the eighth season is going to be its last.

According to Entertainment Weekly, HBO’s new programming president Casey Bloys was asked about Game of Thrones as was to be expected. He was asked if there are plans for the network to follow what showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have wanted and it’s for Season 8 to be the last one for the series.

It appears as if he’s on board.

“Yes, they have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more, I would take 10 more seasons. But…we take their lead on what they think can do the best version of the show.”

For some time now, Weiss and Benioff have said that Season 8 would not only be the final season of Game of Thrones but that it would be a shortened one. They have said in the past that it would consist of a mere six episodes, but Bloys said that number is not yet finalized.

Bloys can’t be happy about losing one of this best shows after just landing in his position at HBO, but there may be something else up his sleeve. When asked about keeping things going with a Game of Thrones spinoff, he was rather uninformative about it but kept the possibility open.

“We’ve talked about it. It’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course, it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure that [Benioff and Weiss] could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production [on season 7]. It’s a pretty intense production, they’re about to start production soon. I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.”

Typically, the new season of Game of Thrones begins in April of each year, but some production delays are pushing that back for Season 7. As of now, new episodes are set to begin airing on HBO in the summer of 2017 which is going to take them out of the Emmy race entirely.

Obviously, fans aren’t overly concerned with awards as they just want the new episodes to start and the bloodshed to begin. For now, they are mostly freaking out because it is set and in place that there will only be two more seasons to come.

If there is going to be a spinoff, it would certainly make the entire Game of Thrones-watching world happy. The only thing is that not only is the material and plot for a spinoff unknown, but it isn’t even confirmed that one will actually happen.

Should there be no spinoff, then it is safe to say that Game of Thrones as a TV series will officially come to a complete end sometime in 2018.

Game of Thrones has drawn in huge numbers during its run on HBO and it will throughout its last two seasons, but fans need to be prepared. With Season 8 being revealed and confirmed as its final one, there will need to be a lot of loose ends and mystery storylines tied up and completed. Of course, there is always the chance that there could be the eternal cliffhanger or even a spinoff but that remains to be seen.
