Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, the gentlemen responsible for founding the video game company BioWare back in 1995, have officially announced their retirement from the industry, Joystiq reports. After spending almost two decades creating some of the most memorable role-playing games in history, Muzyka and Zeschuk are biding farewell to gamers across the globe.
Both gentleman took to their respective blogs to explain the reasons for their retirement. Sadly, it would seem that years working within the industry have taken their toll on Zeschuk. “After nearly twenty years working at BioWare I’ve decided it’s time to move on and pursue something new,” he wrote. “This decision isn’t without significant pain and regret, but it’s also something I know I need to do, for myself and my family. I’ve reached an unexpected point in my life where I no longer have the passion that I once did for the company, for the games, and for the challenge of creation.”
According to NBC News, Zeschuk is putting his talents towards a web-based chat show centered around beer. “The main project I will be working on is a web-based interview show called The Beer Diaries where I interview notable brewers and showcase their beers,” he explained. “If things go well, I’ll work on other beer-related shows, apps and projects. If not, I’ll have drunk a lot of tasty beers and may be back in games or even something else completely different.”
Muzyka, meanwhile, has less keg-oriented goals. “I believe strongly in the power of free enterprise to enable sustainable change, so my next ‘chapter’ will likely focus on an entirely new industry, something exciting, different and frankly downright scary – investing in and mentoring new entrepreneurs, and more specifically, the field of social/impact investing,” he wrote.
The question remains: Who will fill the void left by Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka at BioWare? The Examiner explains that both Aaryn Flynn, studio manager for BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Montreal, and Jon van Caneghem could be the right guys for the job.
