New ‘Dredd’ Featurette Gives Fans A Look At Costumes, Gear

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for director Pete Travis’ Dredd gives fans a look at the costumes and gear on-display in the latest cinematic adaptation of the popular British comic book. The clip, which debuted at Yahoo! Movies, gives the costume designers and conceptual artists an opportunity to discuss the look and feel of the upcoming movie. This time around, it would seem that filmmakers have captured the spirit of the source material.

The featurette is the latest attempt by the studio to generate some interest in Dredd, which, as of this writing, is currently enjoying a Rotten Tomatoes score of 89 percent. For a brief period of time, the movie was the highest-rated superhero movie of all time. However, now that more reviewers have posted their thoughts on the feature, the score has dropped a bit. Not much, mind you, but enough to rob the film of its impressive accomplishment.

Unfamiliar with the Dredd storyline? Have a look at this plot synopsis, straight from the boys and girls at Lionsgate:

“The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.”

Karl Urban, who stars as the crime-fighting Judge Dredd, revealed his excitement about the project during a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting. “I read the script and firstly I was just relieved to find it was fainted to the character that I loved when I was a kid,” he explained at the time. Urban went on to say that he only took the role because the character didn’t remove his helmet halfway through the picture, a problem that plagued Sylvester Stallone’s adaptation in 1995 adaptation.

Dredd — which stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey — explodes across US theaters on September 21. The aforementioned behind-the-scenes featurette has been embedded below.
