Apple iPhone Sales Might Be Dipping, But Are Still Strong Enough To Beat Forecasts

The Apple iPhone might be holding its own when it comes to the smartphone wars, but it appears to be struggling a bit against its closest competitors. A new report indicates what once was the world’s premiere smartphone saw units shipped dip a bit compared to years past.

It should be pointed out that even with those lower numbers, the Apple iPhone was still able to beat projections. According to DW, sales for the phone were down in the second quarter by 27 percent, year over year.

As a kind of rebuttal to sales numbers struggling, Apple has said it is not focusing on sales of handsets as much anymore. These days, services and apps surrounding the iPhone are the firm’s primary focus. Despite some crowing from people that support Android, it should be pointed out the deflated sales numbers still include better than projection units.

Still, Apple knows there is a bit of a problem when taking into account the Cupertino firm had been on a 13-year streak of growth. The financial sector is also showing that the sales drop hasn’t affected Apple’s performance in the stock market. The firm’s stock price has gone up seven percent over the last few days.

Part of the problem when it comes to sales of the iPhone is likely the lack of innovation from one model to another in the last year. There may be a bit of a boost this fall when the Apple iPhone 7 hits the market this fall. Of course, for that to happen, Apple has to issue a new model this autumn.

So far, Apple has not even said whether an iPhone 7 is indeed on the table. Industry insiders indeed believe such a handset is coming, but Apple is as close-lipped as usual when it comes to its plans.

The bad news about sales isn’t limited only to the iPhone. The Apple Watch and iPad are also seeing struggles on store shelves. While revenues have been down across the board when it comes to units sold, the iPad Pro seems to have helped cushion that blow.

The New York Times is reporting Apple’s services, such as Apple Music and iCloud storage, are both seeing a boost in popularity. This is also helping blunt the blow against increased popularity of Android devices. Android phones and Android tablets are all seeing increases in sales over the previous year.

The usual refrain from Apple supporters is Android has a bit of a benefit in units sold because the operating system is used in so many different models. The Apple iPhone is only released in one or two models per year. While Android has managed to outsell its competitor, Apple has managed to keep its handset as something that is a little more special.

Make no mistake, the firm that has been among the most popular in the world for decades is worried. Places like China, which have normally been a stronghold see interest wane in its products.

Revenue was down a whopping 33 percent in Asia in general. Apple chief financial officer Luca Maestri recently talked to the BBC about those concerns recently.

“It is very clear that there are some signs of economic slowdown in China, and we will have to work through them. We understand China well, and we remain very, very optimistic about the future there.”

It’s likely the firm will continue to point to numbers which weren’t as bad as analysts believed they would be as a positive. If there is an Apple iPhone 7 released this fall, that will help as well.
