If you’re one of those die-hard Les Miserables fans I keep hearing about, I’m afraid I have a bit of bad news to report. Universal Pictures has delayed the musical’s release in order to pit it against other Christmas openers.

Les Miserables, directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, will now open on December 25, 2012 (Christmas Day) according to an announcement by Universal Pictures via The Hollywood Reporter. Relax, Les Mis fans. This isn’t all that terrible as the original release was set for December 14th, so you’re only looking at a delay of a little over a week.

The real inconvenience here? Les Mis has Christmas Day competition now, and you’re going to have to choose between that and other anticipated openings.

The epic period musical about redemption and forgiveness will face-off against The Weinstein’s Co.’s period picture Django Unchained and Paramount’s comedy The Guilt Trip. The former is Quentin Tarantino’s highly-anticipated Inglourious Basterds follow-up, a Western that deals with familiar themes of revenge, though swapping Nazis with deep south plantation owners. The latter is a comedy/road movie starring Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen.

Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up semi-sequel This is 40 debuts on December 21. One high-profile film that Les Mis won’t have to compete with is The Great Gatsby which was pushed off until next summer, reports Perez.
