‘Suicide Squad’ Star Margot Robbie Reacts To ‘Really Weird’ Vanity Fair Piece

Margot Robbie may be a rising star, brightening up the big screen with many new films like Suicide Squad and The Legend of Tarzan, but that doesn’t mean she gets away from doing interviews and promotional pieces, just as she recently did with Vanity Fair. The article was supposed to profile Margot for fans and, while giving the Suicide Squad actress greater coverage, it was hoped that the piece would also bring attention to Robbie’s recent film, The Legend of Tarzan, but something went wrong. Rich Cohen was hoping to spice up the article by infusing it with a bit off humor, but, instead of sounding funny and evoking a few laughs, the piece comes off as being an awkward and, in Margot’s words, a “really weird” read.

The Public Calls Out Vanity Fair Writer Over Disrespecting Margot Robbie

The article in question, one which has stirred the anger of Australians and feminists alike, has not been taken as lightly as Cohen would have liked, as The Hollywood Reporter reports that the writer’s comments are being viewed as sexist toward Ms. Robbie, as well as critical of Margot’s homeland of Australia. While Ms. Robbie does comment on her experience with Cohen, she also points out that much of the Vanity Fair writer’s commentary wasn’t made available to her during the interview process, leading her to judge the entirety of the article as any other reader would view the piece.

In describing the actress, he lists Margot’s physical attributes in a way that seem more insulting than flattering. Even if he had intended to deliver an honest assessment of Robbie, Rich’s description of the Suicide Squad actress seems to miss the mark completely.

“She is 26 and beautiful, not in that otherworldly, catwalk way but in a minor knock-around key, a blue mood, a slow dance,” writes Cohen. “She is tall but only with the help of certain shoes. She can be sexy and composed even while naked but only in character.”

If his description of Ms. Robbie was insulting, his words about her home country are that much more so, leaving many to wonder just where Cohen’s humor was intended to make itself known. Is it any wonder there was so much backlash from Australians in the online community?

“Australia is America 50 years ago, sunny and slow, a throwback, which is why you go there for throwback people,” Cohen wrote. “They still live and die with the plot turns of soap operas in Melbourne and Perth, still dwell in a single mass market in Adelaide and Sydney.”

It wasn’t just feminists and Australians who were offended and put off by the piece, reveals CNN. Pretty much anyone who read the article was left feeling that they had just read something wholly inappropriate and unnecessarily unflattering. For Margot, herself, she admits she felt awkward, even during the actual interview, but had held hope that the finished piece would have been more polished.

“I remember thinking, that was a really odd interview. I don’t know how that’s going to come out,” Ms. Robbie said. “And then when I read it. I was like yeah, the tone of this is really weird. Like, I don’t really know what he’s trying to get at.'”

Still, Margot says she’s not angry over the Vanity Fair article, and she feels most people are getting too upset over the piece, particularly because there’s much worse floating around the internet. Robbie adds that she reads much worse and more derogatory remarks on a daily basis, suggesting that maybe she has become desensitized to the insulting comments.

While she might have a thick skin when it comes to the personal remarks, Margot Robbie is far less forgiving when it comes to insulting her fellow countrymen.

“Don’t you mess with the Aussies. Look what happens when you mess with Australia,” says Ms. Robbie.

Suicide Squad, starring Margot Robbie, David Harbour, and Jared Leto, will hit theaters on August 5.
