PS4 Vs Xbox One… Versus NES Mini And Sega Genesis? Retro Releases Look To Take Back The Spotlight In 2016 Holiday Season

The Sega Genesis has just become the next console in the war that began in 2013. This is an exciting time for fans of classic video games, with remastered PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games being re-released for the current gen and Nintendo bringing back the box that brought gaming back from the crash of 1983.

For gamers who still believe graphics matter, the Xbox One S and PlayStation Neo are set to be released this year, with the Xbox Scorpio following in 2017. These consoles will be looking to close the ever-present gap between console gaming and the PC “master race” by sporting many of the same upgrades present in high-end gaming PCs. Following the trend started by Apple, it appears Sony and Microsoft are planning to simply re-release upgraded versions of the Xbox One and PS4, prolonging the console war possibly further than the last generation did.

Older gamers and possibly curious younger ones will be excited to see the return of the Sega Genesis and NES in 2016. The NES Classic Mini will come packed with 30 ROMs and plug directly into the TV via HDMI, and now Sega’s 16-bit mega-hit is following this up with 80 ROMs built in (which has been done before, as seen in the video above). Sega is also one-upping the competition just like before. Originally, it was said to use “blast processing,” which literally meant nothing, a buzzword to make the console look better. This time, Sega seems to be aiming at what Nintendo is doing and offering even more.

The Mega Drive will support classic cartridges, just in case you have them sitting around in storage, as well as SD cards for loading more titles into the system. It will also use ports for plug-in controllers, but offer a wireless option with rechargeable batteries. It’s unknown if it will use the cord to charge directly from the console like you can with the PS4 and Xbox One.

Some sources state that you should probably hold off on pre-ordering the Sega Genesis mini-console. Its manufacturer isn’t Sega, but At Games, a Chinese company known for low-quality merchandise. It might not actually support all of the cartridges you have sitting around in storage, and the wireless connectivity could be riddled with lag.

In addition, the list of 80 games features mostly little-known titles, some which were memorable but not that good, such as Altered Beast.

The full list of Sega Genesis games the mini console comes with is below.

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

There is also apparently no game save option on the Sega Genesis mini console, so titles like Phantasy Star will literally require you to finish them in one session.

Will you be pre-ordering this answer to the NES Classic Mini, or do the potential quality issues make you want to wait for reviews before handing over your money?
