Happy National Cheeseburger Day!

In case you needed an actual excuse to eat cheeseburgers, September 18 is officially National Cheeseburger Day. Yep, the humble cheeseburger, widely believed to be a product of the 1920s, now has its own national day. The moar you know.

But, as well as deliciousness, there are some other good reasons to nom a cheeseburger today, with burger chains and other firms offering cheeseburger-related promotions.

For instance, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, Five Guys Burgers & Fries and Kraft Cheese have teamed up and will donate the equivalent of a meal to Feeding America, an organization that runs food banks across the United States, for every cheeseburger purchased in the restaurant on September 18. In other words, you stuffing your face with cheesy, beefy tastiness will put food in the mouth of someone needier than yourself, someone who may not be able to afford cheeseburgers willy-nilly. This is being run through Foursquare check-ins, so, to ensure your meal at Five Guys counts towards Kraft’s donations, you’ll need to go to the Kraft site and link your foursquare account. This offer starts today and runs for two weeks, so get chomping!

Elsewhere, the New Jersey-based Smashburger chain is giving away free Smashburgers to anyone with the name “Burger”. Smashburger operates 10 stores throughout Northern New Jersey, which White Pages says is home to approximately 556 people with the last name “Burger.” Look sharp, you Burgers (and don’t forget your proof of name: A valid driver’s license, passport, or picture ID will do)!

Meanwhile, if you’re the kind of person who prefers to watch cheeseburger-nomming (weirdo), then the D.C.-based burger chain BGR: The Burger Joint has revealed it will be awarding a cash prize to the person who can eat the most cheeseburger sliders in 10 minutes. The contest will be held at noon on September 18 at BGR’s outpost at 4827 Fairmont Ave. in Bethesda, Maryland. BGR spokesperson Kenny Fried told The Huffington Post that the 10 competitors have already been chosen and will compete for a $500 top prize. But, hey, spectators at the gorgefest will be fed free samples from the BGR menu.
