On Monday, BioWare announced that the next installment in its Dragon Age franchise, titled Dragon Age III: Inquisition, is under development. A release date is expected sometime around late 2013.

In a post on the Dragon Age website, BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah revealed that Dragon Age III has been in development for about two years and that the game will be running on an all-new engine inspired by DICE’s Frostbite 2.

Although the original garnered praise from gamers and critics alike, Dragon Age II was not exactly well received. It was a big departure from the original and took out a lot of what made the first game so darn good. With Dragon Age III, BioWare hopes to bring that back.

“We’ve been poring over player feedback from past games and connecting directly with our fans,” Darrah wrote. “They haven’t held back, so we’re not either. With Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, we want to give fans what they’re asking for – a great story with choices that matter, a massive world to explore, deep customization and combat that is both tactical and visceral.”

Beyond that, Darrah wasn’t willing to share any additional information. BioWare had previously said that it didn’t plan to talk about Dragon Age III until they had something to show, but the developer decided to go ahead and confirm it in light of recent rumors.

“We are going to be as open as we can,” Darrah added. “We will continue to have a dialogue with you and answer what questions we can. Keep providing us with your feedback. I´m excited about what we are working on and I hope that you will be too. I know this is going to be hard to believe, but it is just as hard for me not to tell you stuff as it is for you to wait.”
