Comic-Con 2016: ‘Pokémon GO,’ ‘Adventure Time’ Get ‘Simpsons’ Treatment

It’s confirmed: The Simpsons will indeed be coming out with an episode featuring Pokémon GO and an Adventure Time crossover episode.

Pokémon GO is taking the nation by storm, luring in millions of players and billions of playing time as it requires immense effort, time, and patience for a person to catch ’em all. While Pokémon GO has yet to officially release in certain parts of the globe, it has already gained worldwide fame. Even people who have not previously been fans of the original Pokémon series are already picking up their smartphones to play the game!

And of course, American animated sitcom The Simpsons couldn’t possibly let this opportunity escape. We have seen Spider Pig, Simon Cowell, Jack Bauer, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — of course, we were bound to see Homer playing Pokémon GO!

In fact, last weekend, Animation on Fox came out with a Simpsons and Pokémon Go clip on YouTube titled “The Simpsons: Pokémon Now.” The 40-second clip featured Homer being the great parent that he usually is. Homer takes Bart and Lisa to the zoo but all that Homer does is sit on a bench and play Pokémon GO. Lisa and Homer try to catch his attention by toying with the lion but Homer ignores them.

Will this feature turn into a full on episode? The creators of The Simpsons revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 that The Simpsons will indeed come out with a Pokémon GO, although the plot will be different from what we’ve seen.

During the audience Q&A at the Simpsons panel in Ballroom 20, a fan asks the producers if a Pokémon GO episode was really in the works. Executive producer Al Jean revealed that the team is already working on the Pokémon GO episode. Jean tellsEntertainment Weekly that the episode will air towards the end of Season 28, but he’s “fully confident that [Pokémon Go] is still going to be a big thing” by then. The storyline, instead of just Homer getting addicted to the game, is that father and daughter tag team Homer and Lisa are playing Pokémon Go all the time and they are wasting all the money.

We have seen several crossovers with The Simpsons in the past, such as “Simpsorama,” which was a The Simpsons and Futurama crossover (which was totally fine since Matt Groening is the man behind the two series), “Brick Like Me,” from Season 25 that turned all The Simpsons characters into LEGO, and even “The Flintstones Couch” where The Flintstones Fred, Wilma, and Pebbles join the family in one episode.

Adventure Time has been around for a couple of seasons now, hooking kids and kids-at-hearts alike. At the Simpsons panel, showrunners also confirmed that they are coming out with an Adventure Time crossover. Apparently, Simpsons supervising director Mike Anderson is a huge fan of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, so he pitched it and ended up directing the episode.

If you love the Adventure Time theme song, you’ll love it more as it gets Simpson-ized to “Simpsons Time,” which will be sung by the show’s creator, Pendleton Ward.

The Simpsons panel at the San Diego Comic-Con 2016 also revealed that their 600th episode will be another “Treehouse of Horror” episode. The upcoming episode will be the 27th Treehouse episode by The Simpsons.

The Simpsons will return to Fox with Season 28 this coming Fall 2016.
