Top 10 Movies You Need to Check Out This 2016—From ‘War Dogs’ to ‘Assassin’s Creed’


This year is a golden year for movies. From horror to rom-com to novel and even game adaptations, the big screen is jam-packed with massive titles that will be released soon. Though massive franchise releases are just around the corner, here are other movies you might also want to check out.

1. The Nice Guys

This is a production by Silver Pictures and RatPac-Dune Entertainment. Starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, the story will embody the 70’s gangster scene. The criminal duo will then find themselves in a situation where they have to be the good guys—this is where the struggle happens.

2. War Dogs

War Dogs is another in the Crime/Drama genre and stars another compatible comedic duo: Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. This is somehow reminiscent of Jonah Hill’s work with Leonardo Di Caprio in The Wolf of Wall Street. Another real-life adaptation, Teller and Hill will play the big bosses of a rags-to-riches weapons manufacturer. Bradley Cooper is also in the film.

3. Snowden

Just as the name implies, the movie is going to feature the telling journey of ex-C.I.A. employee Edward Snowden. There has been multiple films about him before, but this version goes a little more intimate. Played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the movie will show the ups and downs of Snowden’s massive knowledge on the C.I.A. They also showed how he really struggled to keep his head above water. The thriller/drama will launch on Sept. 16, 2016.

4. Edge of Seventeen

The Edge of Seventeen features Hailee Steinfeld and Blake Jenner, both stars that played on musical-inspired projects before. This comedy/drama will revolve around the life of Nadine Byrd who has an extremely popular older brother. High-school life tried to eat her up and she has no one to turn to. She even approached one of her teachers and told him that she is going to commit suicide. Instead of supporting her, the cold teacher just wittily mocked her efforts. See how Hailey will survive the most challenging part of her life…so far.

5. Bad Moms

Now this is a star-studded movie that speaks volumes. Directed and written by Scott Moore and Jon Lucas, the movie stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Annie Mumolo, Jay Hernandez, Chritina Applegate and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is the ultimate battle of the perfect moms and the bad moms. Who will win?

6. Nerve

Nerve has an unusual pairing of Dave Franco and Emma Roberts. The two will be caught up in the viral game called “Nerve,” The survival game with the foundation of Truth or Dare. The rules are simple. If you complete the dare, you earn money. However, the two protagonists will be pushed to the edge as the entire Internet watches their every move.

7. The Model

The Model features the life of a person behind the fashion industry. Though it looks like everyone is glamorous on the outside, The Model shows the audience the hard part of the game. Aside from the harsh, egocentric industry, the work actually has a lot of emotional intricacies that can push anyone to the edge.

8. The Girl on The Train

The Girl on the Train has already garnered so much buzz, especially since it is a novel adaptation. It is a complicated drama/thriller about Rachel Watson’s life after her divorce. It oozes the Gone Girl vibe because nobody really knows what happened when this girl just disappeared out of nowhere. Rachel, played by Emily Blunt, is now being investigated since she was the last one to see the girl alive.

9. A Hologram for the King

This is a unique movie starring Tom Hanks. It’s about a failed American businessman who is trying to close the biggest deal of his life in Saudi Arabia. His adventure would then be joined by a beautiful doctor and a witty all-around taxi driver. It is exciting to see Tom Hanks in a different light.

10. Assassin’s Creed

Last but not the least is the movie adaptation of the game Assassin’s Creed. The movie will star Michael Fastbenter and Marion Cotillard, both have played lead roles on the movie Macbeth. The movie will show the background of the game and why it is set on the Spanish Inquisition era. With a $150 million budget, the movie is set to release on Dec. 21, 2016.
