There is plenty of attention on Sunday’s match, which pits two countries familiar with playing on football’s biggest stage. For France, the match will be a chance for the nation to ease a bit of the sting from the Euro 2016, which saw the French team fall to Portugal 1-0 in the final.

The French team will meet Italy in the Euro U19 final at Rhein-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim, German. Kickoff is scheduled for 20:30 local time.

Sunday’s European Under-19 final will be the end of a tournament that stretched back nearly a year. The U19 Championship consists of three rounds, with the first qualifying round taking place last fall with 13 groups of four teams playing in mini-tournaments held in one venue. The top two from each group advanced along with the third-place team with the best record against the top pair in the group, UEFA noted.

The next round took place in the spring, with the 27 qualifying teams joining the top seed in seven mini-tournament groups of four. The final tournament included the seven mini-tournament winners and the host team playing in two groups of four.

France advanced to the Euro U19 final thanks to a 3-1 win over Portugal, getting some measure of payback after the Euro 2016 final earlier this month. After giving up an early goal, France maintained their composure and struck back to tie the match.

“We came out after half-time with confidence, even if Portugal had a good chance almost immediately,” noted Kylian Mbappé of France, who netted two goals in the semifinal win. “We managed to get in front and then got the third goal soon after and then we knew we’d done it. Now it’s the final against Italy and we’ll be giving everything to win that too.”

Mbappé said his team must turn their focus to an Italian team strong on both sides of the pitch.

“A final is a match apart. You generally play against big teams, and Italy are certainly a big team,” he said. “We know what they can do. They defend very well and they’re capable of hitting you on the counterattack so we’ll have to prepare properly and recover well. We’ll be in good shape to win; we want to become European champions.”

Italy advanced to the Euro U19 final thanks to a 2-1 win over England, a team many had picked to win it all. Though this will be Italy’s first U19 final in nine years, it comes as the culmination of a team that has been building experience together for several years, one that advanced to the U17 championship together in 2013.

Italian left-back Federico Dimarco, who scored two goals in the semifinal, told UEFA.com that the experience in the U17 was a huge boost.

“I learned so much from getting to the U17 final [in 2013; Italy lost on penalties to Russia]; learning is good as it helps you play better. I want to thank all my team-mates because even if I score the goals, it is the whole team that wins. We’re in the final now and we’ll do our best to win that as well.”
