Netflix News: Trailers for Three New Marvel Shows—The Defenders, Iron Fist, And Luke Cage

On Thursday, Netflix released trailers for three original Marvel shows: Luke Cage, The Defenders, and Iron Fist. Netflix currently hosts two Marvel shows, Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and they were well received by audiences and critics alike. The first season of Daredevil scored 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and the premier season of Jessica Jones scored a 93 percent. With Marvel and Netflix becoming a popular duo, fans are delighted that more Marvel shows are in the works, including a series for The Punisher.

Luke Cage had a reoccurring role on Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and fans of Cage are delighted that he is getting his own show. Netflix and Marvel’s Luke Cage is set to be released on September 30, and the trailer is fittingly set to the music of the late Wu Tang Clan member, ODB.

Cage is portrayed by Mike Colter, and as Collider reported, the actor gave insight on Luke Cage in a roundtable discussion at San Diego’s Comic-Con.

“He’s [Luke Cage] a guy that has been thrust into a place that he doesn’t really want to be. He’s a guy who’s been endowed with abilities, as they say. To him, it’s not positive. At least he doesn’t see it that way. He’s reluctant, and he’s the kind of guy who shies away from the spotlight. He’s a humble guy. He doesn’t want any part of this. But ultimately, it’s something that he’s going to have to deal with. It’s perfect for me because I don’t really like the spotlight either. I think with him, it feels like a glove.”

Iron Fist is listed to debut next year, and Danny Rand’s character (Iron Fist) is played by Finn Jones, whose most notable performance was on Game of Thrones. Last April, Entertainment Weekly spoke with Jones and he talked on how he felt about the character.

“I love the character. What really drew me was the character and the story. I really enjoy how he’s a superhero with a real heart but has spiritual elements as well. I think it’s going to be an exciting character to play because there’s this contraction of on one hand he’s from a very wealthy family, he’s a billionaire, on the other hand he’s been in this world of K’un-Lun for a long time where he’s learned kung fu and buddhist philosophy. There’s a contradiction in those elements that’s going to be really fun to play.”

Also set to debut next year is Netflix and Marvel’s The Defenders. The Defenders are a group made up of Iron Fist, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The show will be released after Iron Fist, and although the trailer doesn’t show much, it certainly leaves an impact.

Krysten Ritter plays Jessica Jones, and in an interview with IndieWire, the actress spoke of what it is like to work on a Netflix show and also revealed her excitement for The Defenders.

“The cool thing about Netflix is the amount of time you get for character development. We don’t have to do commercial breaks or recaps because it’s designed as a 13-hour movie…

I’m very much looking forward to The Defenders, also because all of these shows they are doing are so unique. It will be interesting to see how they come together. Jessica is an anti-superhero so I don’t know what that means for her. They have proven themselves over and over that they will blow people’s minds and make s*** work, so I’m looking forward to it. I think it will be a big giant f****** rad show.”

With the team of Netflix and Marvel releasing new series of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and with The Punisher in the works, it seems the Marvel universe is just getting started on Netflix.
