Congratulations STELLAR! — K-Pop Girl Group Successful In Summer Comeback With ‘Cry’ Without Abusing Sexy Concept

Over the past two years, the K-pop community has seen a number of K-pop girl groups come back from the brink of disbandment due to not being popular enough — EXID and Brave Girls for example. However, the two K-pop girl groups have one detail in common with their comeback: the sexy concept. It seems that in the industry in general, if a K-pop girl group or female act wants to get noticed, they have to be sexual enticing, play on carnal appetites. To make it worse for them, some of them may not be 100 percent comfortable doing such concepts but will do so just to make it in the K-pop industry.

With that in mind, Stellar fits the dilemma mentioned above. Back in 2014, they were on the brink of disbanding because they weren’t doing well. Eventually, Stellar found success with their first sexy concept song “Marionette” off their first extended play (EP), a mini-album of the same name. Stellar would eventually follow up with two more sexy concept comebacks with stand-alone song “Vibrato” and “Sting” from their second mini-album of the same name.

Despite the success of their sexy concept comebacks, Stellar still wanted to be a K-pop girl group that didn’t depend so heavily on it. So, Stellar risked losing their fandom by announcing their July summer comeback will might drop the sexy concept. Apparently, Stellar shouldn’t have feared anything because their fans have grown to respect them as a K-pop act, not necessarily just eye candy. This was proven when Stellar was praised for professionalism during a live performance when they continued performing a cappella after the backtrack skipped and cut off. Ergo, “Cry” is the first successful K-pop comeback Stellar has that doesn’t depend heavily on the sexy concept.

“Cry” is the featured song off Stellar’s seventh single album of the same name. It also received plenty of attention prior to its release, because Stellar kept saying it would be a comeback in which they showed their “true colors.” Many K-pop fans were impressed with Stellar’s “true colors.” For starters, the music video for “Cry” takes the K-pop girl group consisting of Gayoung, Minhee, Hyoeun, and Jeonyul outside of the box set or studio. Their last three successful comebacks featuring their songs “Marionette,” “Vibrato,” and “Sting,” were recorded in such. As for the song stylistically, it is very good, going in a different direction compared to past songs. This direction however seems to showcase the musical range Stellar has. It also seems to concentrate a lot on natural visuals (which is big in Asian entertainment) too.

AllKpop also reported on Stellar’s comeback “Cry,” and they hit the nail right on its head with their review. Besides the music video for “Cry” being outside of the box set and studio, they said it was “a lot of fun, if a lot less daring.” For starters, it truly has the feel of summer as the girls are heading on a summer retreat, a camping spot to spend the night at a trailer. The camaraderie found among friends is highlighted through selfies and the recording of their adventure. Yet, there is a bit of aggression, too, as Stellar cause chaos at a pool where a man, which the viewer assumes has caused issues with Stellar, is kicked into pool in “This is Sparta!” style, but not right after they blast everything with water guns.

It has been five days since “Cry” was uploaded on the official YouTube page for The Entertainment Pascal, and it already has almost 300,000 views. That is technically a good start for them. As for the album, Cry, it consists of three tracks and is only available via digital download.
