Munich Shooter Reportedly Obsessed With Violence, Found With ‘Why Pupils Shoot’ Pamphlet

The Munich shooter who went on a rampage in a German mall on Friday was obsessed with violence and death, according to sources in Germany. The gunman, who has been identified as an 18-year-old German-Iranian man, was born and raised in the city where he carried out his shootings.

The Munich shooter knew the area where he would carry out his murders quite well, having been brought up there. This is likely why the young man was able to carefully plan and carry out the ghastly attack.

Fox News reports the Munich shooter not only went to the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall because he knew there would be the maximum number of victims there, but he even invited others to come before he began his attack. The attacker apparently had decent to above average technical skills as he was able to hack a Facebook account to carry out part of his plan.

After the Munich shooter got access to this account, he sent out fake invitations for free giveaways at the mall. He urged people to come to what would eventually become his killing fields, according to German police.

Beyond his love of death and destruction, authorities have not been able to tell why the Munich shooter decided to go on his spree or why he picked Friday. While the man was of Iranian descent, investigators do not believe he is directly tied to any terrorist groups. German police, who gave a press conference not long after the murderer killed himself, said they didn’t believe this was in any way tied to any sort of refugee crisis either.

ABC News reports that now that the smoke has cleared, the Munich shooter injured 27 people and killed another nine for a grand total of 36 victims in the attack. Police reported the victims’ ages were 15, 15, 14, 14, 14, 17, 19, 20, and 45, the latter of whom was female. It’s not clear whether he was looking for people his own age to take down, or whether they were simply in the closest vicinity to him.

One of the interesting things about the way the Munich shooter carried out his attack was that he didn’t use an assault rifle. The weapon of choice for this killer was a 9mm Glock pistol. The 18-year-old took his weapon, as well as a pack holding more than 300 rounds, into the mall to start his brutal spree. Authorities also found a pamphlet with his body titled “Why Pupils Shoot.”

While police did attempt to take down the Munich shooter, an autopsy revealed none of the rounds fired at the killer found their mark. The killing blow was done by the gunman himself, apparently when he realized he was cornered.

When Munich first heard there was a shooter on the loose, there was apparently some confusion and some authorities thought the Munich shooter had accomplices. There were also fears that more than one shooter was planning to attack other public locations in Munich.

The city briefly went into lockdown after reports of shots fired at the Olympia mall. The United States embassy also issued a “shelter in place” after the Munich shooter began his killings. Just days after the terrorist incident in Nice, France, it appears the world is almost always bracing for more and deadlier attacks.

Because there is no evidence that this young man had any ties to terrorist organizations, the killings underline just how hard it has become to detect and stop mass shootings in the 21st century. While there are some who never expect this kind of thing outside the United States, madmen with guns are becoming more prevalent everywhere.

To some degree, the people of Germany have left out a sigh of relief that this wasn’t the work or ISIS. The Munich shooter acted alone and was simply dangerously obsessed with mass killings.
