Is ‘Pokémon GO’ Down? Here’s How To Check If The Popular Game’s Servers Are Down Again

Is Pokémon GO down again?

After the wildly popular app was hit with intermittent server problems that left players waiting for the game to come back online, a few options have emerged so players can quickly and easily check whether it’s a problem with their device or if the game is facing wider server issues.

There has been plenty of downtime since the game’s release earlier this month. In the last week, Pokémon GO went down on Wednesday and other reports of an outage on Friday. The outages prompted many people to go online, searching social media and news sites for word on how long the servers have been down and when they might back.

There are now a few sites where players can turn to see if Pokémon GO is down or experiencing server problems. The most information comes from the aptly named IsPokémonGoDownOrNot, which has running graphs of how well the game’s server is working and the login duration across different regions.

Those looking for a more simple answer as to whether Pokémon GO‘s server is down can turn to Pokémon Go Server Status which displays the server status, the status of the Pokémon trainer club, and the game’s uptime. If the servers are down, players can see just how long it’s been offline and how the uptime has been over the last hour and a separate reading of the last 24 hours.

While the launch of Pokémon GO has been a success beyond Nintendo’s wildest imagination, it has been hit with some server problems that’s made it difficult for players. Many have reported the game freezing or being disconnected, which tends to happen when an enormous number of players go online to participate in the same Pokémon-catching game.

And Pokémon GO has seen some unprecedented success so far. Apple confirmed on Friday that Pokémon GO was downloaded more times in its first week than any other app in history, CNET reported. The report noted that it only took four days after its July 6 release for the game to snag the No. 1 spot among free apps in Apple’s store, leading to a huge boost for Nintendo.

“App analytics company Sensor Tower said earlier this week that the app from Nintendo and Niantic has been downloaded more than 30 million times on iOS and Android and has earned more than $35 million in revenue. It’s used more daily than some of the world’s most established apps, including Facebook.”

But there could be more difficulty ahead for the overworked Pokémon GO servers. Venture Beat noted that the game was expected to be launched in Japan on Friday, a country where Pokémon is at its peak popularity. The millions of new players expected to join the game will likely put even more strain on the servers and could cause Pokémon GO to go down again.

There could be more outages on the way. A group of hackers threatened this week to knock Pokémon GO‘s servers down with a distributed denial-of-service attack, commonly known as DDoS. The group, which identifies itself as Poodlecorp, threatened to take the popular game down on Monday, August 1.

As Time noted, the oddly named group has claimed responsibility for a previous attack that took down the game’s servers.

“Yep, Poodlecorp. This is the team of hackers that claimed responsibility for taking down the Pokémon Go servers using a DDoS attack on Saturday. A Poodlecorp team member then tweeted that this was just ‘a lil test’ and that they would ‘do something on a larger scale soon,’ according to the Independent.”

While it may be frustrating for players when Pokémon GO is down, at least they will now be able to know when it’s a server problem and just how long it’s been going on for.
