‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 Characters: Khal Drogo’s Return Could See Daenerys’ Husband As The Latest Character Resurrected

Game of Thrones Season 6 has started something of a trend in Westeros, with characters who were believed to be dead brought back to life. It’s a mechanic that’s completely changed how Game of Thrones works as a show. With that in mind, speculation is growing that another key character from the world of Game of Thrones could find himself making a return. Khal Drogo played by Jason Momoa, who died in Game of Thrones‘ first season, is a character that many viewers have long forgotten, but he could be about to make a return.

According to the Radio Times, the theory of Khal Drogo’s return comes from a cryptic statement made all the way back at the end of the show’s first season. The theory circles back round to Mirri Maz Duur, the witch who tricked Daenerys Targaryen into using blood magic to save her husband’s life. However, Drogo was left living in the literal sense of the word only, and Daenerys’ unborn child was killed by the magic’s power in the process.

Daenerys demanded to know when her husband would return to her, to which the witch replied by saying “When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the sea goes dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves, when your womb quickens and you bear a living child.” The cryptic message was always believed to mean never.

However, five seasons of Game of Thrones later and viewers of the show are starting to notice that some of the witch’s conditions are being met. Whilst the sun hasn’t literally risen in the west and set in the east, the prophecy could refer to Quentyn Martell’s family crest of the sun burning in the west as he died at the hands of Daenerys Targaryen in the east. That being said, it’s worth remembering that Quentyn Martell’s death is an event exclusive to the books at current.

Other elements of the witch’s statement can be given meaning by recent events in Game of Thrones too. For example, the sea that “goes dry” could refer to the current drought in the grasslands known as the Dothraki Sea. At the same time, there’s also room for “mountains to blow in the wind like leaves” as Daenerys goes head-to-head with Cersei Lannister in the show’s next season, with Cersei’s bodyguard Gregor Clegane, also known as The Mountain, being one of Daenerys’ casualties.

According to Cosmopolitan, the theory continues if Daenerys Targaryen manages to give birth to a baby in Game of Thrones Season 7. The book series has already confirmed that Daenerys’ ability to bear children has returned and considering she’s now on the lookout for a suitor in Westeros, the theory of a baby Targaryen is a very credible one.

That being said, it’s hard to deny that the evidence for Khal Drogo’s return is incredibly circumstantial, especially in the TV show where many of the events of the book series are yet to happen. However, the theory does paint an overall picture of how much has changed since the first season of Game of Thrones, with the once unthinkable now more than possible. Whether Khal Drogo joins the ranks of Jon Snow, Benjen Stark and The Hound in making a surprise return to Game of Thrones remains to be seen in the show’s next season.
