‘General Hospital’ News: Roger Howarth Talks Working With Michelle Stafford And Rebecca Herbst, Discusses The Importance Of Staying Humble

General Hospital megastar Roger Howarth (Franco Baldwin) talked to Soap Opera Digest about why he doesn’t use social media, working with Michelle Stafford (Nina Clay) and Rebecca Herbst (Liz Webber), and the importance of being humble.

Roger Howarth is a legend in the daytime drama world. His career is unlike many others and spans decades (25 years) of continuous work. He has been on many soap operas and now calls General Hospital his home. Until recently, Franco has not been a fan favorite and didn’t get as much airtime as some of the other characters.

General Hospital writers found that when they paired him up with the fellow crazy bird Nina Clay, fireworks erupted between them. ABC Soaps In Depth reports that Franco didn’t expect a romance from Nina, but when it happened, the audience enjoyed seeing them both lean on each other for emotional support.

Even though Franco is now in the midst of a tug-of-war between Nina and Liz on General Hospital, he hopes the writers will think it through before ending his relationship with Nina altogether.

“I think there is a really rich history between Nina and Franco, and I think everybody is really hopeful that the writers will pay attention to that and mine that they don’t just toss it aside because as soon as Nina and Franco are in the same room, something will happen, given the volatility of their emotional lives.”

Roger explains that he enjoys working with Michelle Stafford because she is committed to her character and driven to give Nina roots in Port Charles. Howarth goes on to explain that Rebecca Herbst is a wonderful actress as well. She is committed to bringing the emotional side of Liz out and tries to connect to her alter ego on a deeper level, making her character and acting top-notch and believable.

Roger explains that he doesn’t watch General Hospital and only catches the show if it is on the monitors in the makeup room. He recalls seeing the scene where Franco told Nina that he didn’t want to have children with her. The reactions she had without uttering a word blew Howarth away. He feels lucky to work so closely with Stafford.

Howarth explained that he doesn’t participate in social media or watch the show unless he catches it on the set. Roger explains he isn’t in the business to be famous or to brag about his life on social media.

“What I am hunting for, what I am looking for, is the experience of leaving the set,and knowing we all put together something great by the end of the day. I do not need to watch the show to confirm that it happened. For me to watch the show, I sit in judgment and think of all the ways it could have been better. For me, that is a trap and it’s better not to watch, period.”

Howarth states that he doesn’t need to read social media to verify that he is doing well on the show. He explains that when on the set, the studio audience’s reaction lets you know how you did.

Roger added that his children do not watch General Hospital, nor do they ask any questions about his job. He doesn’t find that odd either because his father was a teacher and never talked to him about his job.

At the end of the day, Roger Howarth explains that he is thankful for his job at General Hospital. He tries to remain humble and grateful to his fans for their ongoing support, as they have followed him to whatever soap opera he is working on at the moment.
