‘Luke Cage,’ ‘Iron Fist,’ And ‘Defenders’ Teasers Debut At San Diego Comic-Con 2016

Marvel’s Luke Cage is next in line in the Marvel/Netflix string of shows, with Daredevil and Jessica Jones already making their debut. Luckily for comic book fans, the cast and showrunner of Luke Cage made an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and sat down for a panel in Hall H.

Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, Mike Colter, Simone Missick, Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard, Frank Whaley, and Theo Rossi were all present to talk about Luke Cage, the Los Angeles Times reports. Some pretty interesting tidbits of information were revealed.

Coker is a former music journalist who knew rapper Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G.), and he told the crowd that the attitude of the late rapper is going to reflect the Luke Cage series, if not just the character himself.

“The world is ready for a bulletproof black man,” Coker told the crowd in Hall H, according to Deadline. “It’s got a ’90s vibe but very much of today, and I can’t wait for you to see more of it.”

According to actress Alfre Woodard, “Harlem deserves a number on the call sheet. Everything that made Harlem what it is now, was there [in the show].”

Rosario Dawson, who played the Claire Temple in both Daredevil and Jessica Jones, will appear in Luke Cage and is currently filming in New York for another Marvel-Netflix project. Since Iron Fist is still filming, it’s possible that Dawson’s character could be popping up in that show, given that she has appeared in every series so far.

In the Luke Cage teaser, we’re given a look at a sequence involving Luke ripping the door off a car and storms a building filled with criminals. He’s easily taking them all down, almost without any real effort, with his unbreakable skin making him invincible to gunfire and everything else they can throw at him. All while ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” playing in the background.

Twitter, of course, exploded with excitement after the trailer debuted online following the Comic-Con panel.

But fans were treated to much more than just Luke Cage on Thursday at Comic-Con. Iron Fist is still currently in production, and will debut next year, but Marvel was able to put a teaser together to just provide a feel for what fans will be seeing.

Finn Jones plays the title character of Iron Fist/Danny Rand. The character returns to New York City after an extremely long hiatus and ends up fighting against the criminal element within the city with his kung-fu skills, as well as some supernatural powers of his own.

The showrunner, Scott Buck, has “always been drawn to writing complex, intriguing characters, and that’s what most excites me about the opportunity to bring Danny Rand and Iron Fist to life with Marvel on Netflix.”

Marvel CCO Joe Quesada also mentioned that Iron Fist is going to feature quite a number of villains.

Getting footage from both Luke Cage and Iron Fist certainly would have been enough, not to mention the announcement of a third season of Daredevil being confirmed. But we were also given a very brief visual teaser for the mini-series that will bring all four of these superheroes together, Marvel’s The Defenders.

With the visuals provided in the teaser, it’s pretty clear that the street-level heroes will be going up against the Hand, who appeared in the latest season of Daredevil.

Once Iron Fist finishes production, Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, and Finn Jones will begin filming The Defenders at the end of this year. Directly after that, Ritter will go right into filming Season 2 of Jessica Jones.

Luke Cage debuts on Netflix on September 30, 2016.
